There can still be new versions by modders and stuff.

Winamp, dead at 16
Re: Winamp, dead at 16
I used WinAmp as my main player for a while. Later on I used it as the player I used when I just want to listen to something real fast and not wait for my main player to load. Now I use VLC for that purpose. I occasionally used WinAmp for its plugins, but I never bothered with the skins. Perhaps there'll be a petition to open the WinAmp source code like there is for Adobe Fireworks.

I have invested so much time in organizing my itunes and finding album artwork for everything, I can never use anything else ever.
My condolences to the loved ones of winamp.

Probably 30% of all the music I've listened to in my entire was played through Winamp.

I use iTunes as well these days, but I fucking hate it. It is one of the worst interfaces for music listening and organizing ever, and if it weren't for the ease of it communicating with my iOS devices, I'd kick it to the curb in a second.J T wrote:I have invested so much time in organizing my itunes and finding album artwork for everything, I can never use anything else ever.

Any word if it will go open source? Would love to see what the community could do with it.

iTunes
Zune
Windows Media software

Seriously the worst audio playback software I have ever used, not even saying that Winamp is the best, but these are some of the very worst. iTunes and Zune in particular are atrocious and straight up the worst software for audio management/playback you could use period. Even Windows Media Player trumps them, although it is still pretty annoying/bad.

Re: Winamp, dead at 16
I've been using Windows Media Player 12 since I got a laptop with Windows 7 preinstalled. With some extra plugins and codecs, it does everything I want it to and pretty well at that. It's also very responsive and does a nice job displaying album artwork.
Every other iteration is pretty horrible though.
It's too bad the original Windows MP3 player is being discontinued. Rest in peace. I thought Winamp was pretty cool for its extensibility, but it never could read my files' tags without screwing something up. Interface was inefficient to navigate and make no mistake, it is bloatware. It's a media player with an integrated web browser! It was faster to open files in Media Player Classic. For its historical importance and all its cool weird features, it will be missed.
Not that we can't still use it.

Re: Winamp, dead at 16
I heard the news on Facebook, very sad. These days I've abandoned my MP3 library (never rebuilt after a hard drive crash many moons ago), I just use Pandora, Google Play Music, Youtube, etc, but Winamp 2.91 was the last media player I used. Winamp3 was garbage, Winamp 5 wasn't much better (I loved their rationale for the skipping of 4 -- it's 2 + 3, we put in the best features of both!), but 2.91 was light and fast and did what I needed a media player to do -- PLAY MUSIC.
Never did make the switch to the modern way of having libraries and ID3 tags and album art and all that. My stuff was just named properly and sorted by folders. Probably part of why I never tried to rebuild -- too annoying to do again

Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
