Re: Looking into buying a PS3...
As we speak there are a fairly large amount of sellers on amazon.com that have the PS2 for $136 and change brand new. You can also pick up a new PS3 for around $250 on a good deal with a game or two. You are much better off with this set up in the long run.

I was in this exact situation two years ago.
I bought a backwards compatible PS3 and within two months it 'yellow lighted', so EB Games gave me a new Slim PS3 and I managed to buy a PS2 for like 20$.
Also my slim PS3 can play PS1 games, but i'm not sure if all slims can or just my model.

Several of the leaked Black Friday ads have a 250GB PS3 with the Last of Us and Arkham Origins for $200. Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Gamestop, Toys R' Us, and more. I doubt it'll be too hard to snag one of those.casterofdreams wrote:As we speak there are a fairly large amount of sellers on amazon.com that have the PS2 for $136 and change brand new. I'd recommend the Slim or Super Slim PS3 + PS2 setup as well. Fats run hot, and comparably loud. There are still nice aspects to them for PS2 games - stock wireless controllers, virtual memory cards, HDMI connection, and so on...but not enough to make it a must-have.
While the PS2 library is vast, there are a number of HD rereleases on the PS3 to start with anyway.
All PS3 play PS1 games (and they can all be used with remote play as well I think, as opposed to select PS3 games). Also my slim PS3 can play PS1 games, but i'm not sure if all slims can or just my model.
Re: Looking into buying a PS3...
Like many here have said, i would get a Slim PS3(model 2) and get a PS2. The fat PS3 wasn't as bad as the 360 with the RROD, but the early models can be unreliable.
Re: Looking into buying a PS3...
Basically what everyone else has said. It is worth noting that the PS2 backward compatibility isn't even perfect in a lot of cases. On the other hand it usually needs to be reminded that every single PS3 model still plays PSX games like a charm though, if you didn't know that.

Definitely one of the best reasons to own the system. I'd also throw in Journey, Puppeteer, and Sly Cooper Thieves in Time.AppleQueso wrote:Also get Valkyria Chronicles because it's awesome.
All top notch exclusives. That's the great thing about the PS3. It actually still has those

You like gore fest and brawlers? Splatterhouse, btw it includes the 3 classic games as unlockables.
The uncharted games are also recommended.
I'm yet to play a LOT of PS3 so let me put a list of games that interest me:
Resistance fall of Men, Valkyria Chronicles, Alice Madness Returs, Bioshock infinite, Darksiders, Bayonetta (i actually own this one), Journey, The Darkness, Deadly Premonition (but maybe this isn't the best version to get), Dragons Crown, Infamous, Kingdom hearts 1.5 HD remix, Rayman origins/legends, Siren blood curse, Vanquish.
Though most of these games are multiplaform games.

Re: Looking into buying a PS3...
Well, it seems like a unanimous thought process on getting a slim here.
I still have my fat 360, and it still gets the majority of my gaming time, although I'm thinking that I will swap to a PS3 for my "main" console, seeing as I'll be off to college soon and will need to save a bit of money on paying for the online aspects. I will keep my 360 for Shmups (all of which I still need to buy) and certain other exclusives, (I might also keep beat 'em ups and fighters on there). Otherwise, I think I'll be better off re-buying them on PS3. Plus, it lets me play Red Dead Redemption through for the 4th time.

Re: Looking into buying a PS3...
I'm not so sure how re-buying multiplatform games on another console will save you money. You won't have time to play video games in college anyway. Concentrate on classes and getting that "college experience" rather than online gaming and netflix.
Re: Looking into buying a PS3...
I agree with everyone here. Unless you have a space issue, get a PS2 by itself. PS3 silm will definitely be more reliable and cheaper. Not to mention that the PS2 sells for pennies now a days.
