I just picked up a HD CRT Trinitron that has a dvi-d port on the back. From what I understand the VGA output of the Dreamcast is an analougue signal, while dvi-d is digital. Does that mean a simple VGA to dvi adapter will not work?

Been googling for a bit and I can't find much if any info about using a Trinitron dvi-d port with a Dreamcast VGA adapter. Anybody got experience with this?

It would not work. It would have to be DVI A or DVI I on the TV. Otherwise you'll need a BGA to DVI D convertor which will not just be a cheap dongle.

I was afraid of that. When you said not cheap, I was thinking maybe something in the $50 range tops, but anything I can find is more in the 200 area. Oh well, s-video looks good enough I suppose.

Why not shoot for a VGA to Component converter?

monoprice has one:

Can someone tell me the difference between these 2 and which I should buy.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-VGA-TV-VI ... 2ec91572e9

And is that really how much they should be or could I find something cheaper?

One lacks those extra outputs for games or TVs without VGA.

I got one similar to the second one. There is no box, but no issue.

You can win a bid for one of those at a cheap price.

Just see if any of your games you want to play are not VGA capable or patchable. There are only a few but one of them can be one of your favorites.

Someone in my area is selling a Blaze VGA converter with s-video and RCA connections. Is this a good one?

Unlike the VGA box, which only does analog video stuff, a DC to HDMI cable would have to do digital video conversion from the analog signal, since the DC doesn't output a digital video signal. While it might be possible to tap the video signal inside the DC before analog conversion, it would probably have to be adjusted or converted to be sent over HDMI, so it would take some work to mod a DC to do that internally.

MCM electronics has a cheap box that actually works just fine for this, so I am able to use my Dreamcast with my LCD HDTV just fine. I go VGA to HDMI. It would be convenient to have that all in a single adapter, but that's not entirely practical since the digital converter needs external power.

I should note that the cheap MCM Electronics box I have does not upscale, so in order for it to work your TV must accept digital 480p via HDMI.

Also works for pre-HDMI laptops just fine.
