*New - Ratchet & Clank Into the Nexus - PS3 - New*

Well, this is pretty much a traditional R & C game for those of you who didn't like the weird direction the last two games went in. Overall, it's about as good as you would expect an Insomniac made R & C game to be. It's a bit shorter though, and it feels leaner and more focused as they've cut out a lot of the various side activities from previous games like racing, ship combat, etc, etc. Though there is still of course an obligatory Clank mini-game. And you'll still do a lot of traditional R & C stuff like upgrade weapons, find gold bolts, fight in combat arenas, do some light puzzle solving, do lots of platforming, fly to different planets, get skill points, find specs for the Ryno, play through Challenge Mode, etc, etc. While it doesn't quite give you everything you got in previous games, this still feels like a proper R & C game, unlike Quest for Booty, which just felt like DLC. I feel like the stuff that's been cut out is stuff most players probably won't care much about. I feel like Into the Nexus strips Ratchet & Clank down to the core elements that make it work, while removing much of the fluff that is typically used to pad these games out to make them longer.

The weapon selection here is smaller than previous games, and it's pretty much just weapons from previous games recycled with new names and gimmicks. But the new twists they've put on them are pretty funny. The winterizer is pretty hilarious as it plays Christmas carols while turning enemies into snowman. The Mr. Zircon weapon had been altered so that when fully upgraded, his whole family fights with you. This is one of the coolest things about the game as they actually carry on conversations with each other while also commenting on pretty much every thing you do and occasionally insulting you in the process. It's really entertaining. There wasn't a single moment during my playthrough that I didn't have them accompany me into battle.

The writing and humor in this game is top notch. There are some truly clever and hilarious lines in the game that surprised me. Some from the aforementioned Zircon family, some from random enemies you fight, and some from the battle arena announcer. The game comes very close to breaking the fourth wall at times, but doesn't quite go over that line, but there are moments you can tell the game is winking at you. The overall presentation and production value and voice acting in these games have become truly impressive. It doesn't surprise me that a movie is in the works. The game actually comes with a trailer for it. The story feels like an epilogue for the series, yet still leaves a door open at the end for further sequels, much like the Sly Cooper games always do. There's definitely a sense of closure here though and a reverence paid to previous games, so it wouldn't shock me if this were the last one...but I doubt it. This one has a female villain in it, which was a nice change of pace for the series I thought. That one change really gave this installment a bit of a different feel than other R & C games I've played. The game's opening chapter, which is like an extended tutorial, was really good and quickly drew me into the game, and she was definitely part of that.

So yeah basically, it's Ratchet & Clank. You know what you're getting if you have played these before. There's a little less content in this installment, but it's priced appropriately at 30 dollars and for that price you get far more content than Quest for Booty gave us. That game felt like DLC. Into the Nexus is definitely a full fledged Ratchet & Clank game, just one a bit smaller in scope than previous entries. Plus, you get Quest for Booty tossed in for free, though I think it sucks that they couldn't patch in trophies for that game as an added bonus. Oh well

Finally beat this one despite only having a little over 5 hours on it.

That might be my only complaint... even though the game itself feels fully fleshed out for the most part, it would have been nice if it had a few extra levels/bosses and such. This is the general length of most of the RE's and whatnot, but yeah. SH1-2 were both definitely a few hours longer for me.

This one definitely had some great moments and perfected a lot of mechanics the first two games presented. Heather was an awesome character, great music, amazing graphics and art design that holds up really well to this day, and yeah. The cult stuff that I didn't love from the first game... didn't get too over the top here either, I actually ended up liking some of the stuff they did with it towards the end. The ending was a bit odd though, assuming a got a good one (not sure if this one has multiple)?

But, yeah. I guess I'd put SH1 above it for still managing to be creepier (the school level still takes the cake) and just more subtle/weirder in general. Then there's SH2 which was just... completely perfect. I did like how SH3 was a bit more combat oriented though and stood on its own merits. The hospital in this one... was probably the most frightening environment of the first 3 games for me to an extent. Damn that was nuts.

Yeah, there's multiple. Even the "good" ending is still kinda... strange.

Interesting game. But very, very strange, too. The premise involves evolution. You start as a fish and then grind by eating other creatures (real-time, not turn-based) to gain "evolve points." You then level-up after gaining a certain amount of them, and every time you level-up you can decide to evolve a certain part of your body. It is VERY grindy, though.

There are different areas, each with a number of stages. Each era represents a different era in Earth's history such as the Ocean Age, the Amphibian Age, the Dinosaur Age, the Ice Age, etc. And in each area you are a different kind of creature, representative of that era.

82. Pinball Dreams (SNES)(Pinball)
83. The Peace Keepers (SNES)(Beat 'Em Up)
84. Gods (SNES)(Platformer)

Originally for the Amiga and Atari ST, Gods is a platformer which features both fast-paced action, intelligent puzzle design, and a brutal level of difficulty. There are places where you will crawl through this game and others where you will be intrigued by its brilliance. Occasionally you'll also want to throw the controller and call the game dirty words, as it requires a level of precision that sometimes makes the controls feel clunky, especially with the inventory system.

First, Gods has a simple format: 4 levels, each broken into 3 parts and then wrapped up with a boss fight. To progress, you'll need the World Key to open the final door and move into the next section. Depending upon the section you're in, you may simply have to progress to the end, you may need to obtain a set of items, or you may need to kill certain enemies. The game has hints, but they're often cryptic at best, so a lot of Gods is trial and error, and there is a lot of failing and dying. There is a password system, but it only starts you at the beginning of each level, so progress between the parts must be done anew. Enemies only appear in set places, but they can attack in large waves and swiftly, and if you travel too far, you may find yourself surrounded. And since at times certain enemies are necessary for puzzles, you may also end up getting yourself stuck occasionally, which really sucks, especially in the third part of any given level.

The bosses are entertaining and big, but each has a set pattern that is fairly easy to memorize. The second boss, the dragon, can even be faked out with a particular item to the point it will become laughable, and I managed to beat the first three bosses without getting hit. The final boss is another matter, and while I know how to beat him, doing so without getting hit just doesn't seem possible.

I'm glad I've beaten this game, so I can move on to something like ActRaiser. Gods feels rewarding to have beaten, but I don't want to slog my way through it ever again.

Somebody else has played Gods. What a great feeling :)

I know the control is stiff, the deaths are cheap, the puzzles difficult to understand, but there's something I just like about this game. Maybe it's all the crazy firepower and items you can get. Maybe it's the good music on World 2. It's something but I like the game.

All of those old Amiga/Atari ST platformers are hard as balls. Even on consoles, where you think they'd be a bit easier. I'm still trying to get through Shadow of the Beast II.

Rayman Legends WiiU

Feels good to finally have this and beat it, seeing as it's the main game I bought the WiiU for in the first place. The difficulty wasn't nearly as high as I remember Origins and I'm pretty certain the whole of Origins was longer as well. That's not to say it was short, it took me about 6 hours without being a completion so I imagine there's at least a good 12-14 hours packed into it. On the plus side, it includes a good portion of the Origins levels as well. The Teensies are more well hidden this time around though and the level design was just as top notch, if a bit less imaginative than Origins. I liked the additional 3D effects but I actually prefer the hand drawn look of Origins over Legends. I loved it to death from beginning to end and the touch screen stuff was a fun distraction from the normal platforming. I can't say I liked it as much as Origins, but it's the one I'd recommend for the simple fact a good chunk of Origins is included anyway.

I still have 120 Teensies to collect before I can get into the Land of the Livid Dead, where I expect the hardest and best examples of the game are found.

Oh, and the music levels are awesome, especially that final one.
Older. Not wiser.
