Okay, first some credit where credit is due.
Here is the 100 Sega Saturn Games in 10 Minutes video This is a nice video, featuring both domestic and Japanese Saturn games. The big downside, in my opinion, is the trance music. While I like trance, I prefer these videos to have the original game sounds. I don't know why these 100 games in 10 minutes videos tend to have music put on top of the games.
Here is a Top 65 Sega Saturn Import Games video. Great video, although again it'd be nice to ditch the music. My other complaint is how arbitrary such a video is when it claims to be the "top such and such number" of anything.
This has been in the works for nearly 2 years, but tonight I finally completed my very own "100 import-only Sega Saturn games in 10 minutes" video.
Here is my video: 100 import-only Sega Saturn games in 10 minutes.
Some may criticize it for being too shmup-centered or too fighting game-centered. I tried to show a bit of a balance and included several puzzle, RPG, and SRPG games in the mix as well. A volume 2 is already in the works. The list below was pooled together from my own collection (most of the games) and from three of my friends chipped in and lent me several of their games to record footage from. Nah, it's the confinement and restriction that makes the challenge. It's sort of like a haiku in that regard. Some 100 games in 10 minutes videos split each game into 6 seconds each, which seems easier, but I'd rather embellish on a great game like Asuka 120% and spend no more than 2 seconds on a turd like Planet Joker. As such, lots of tough editing decisions are made when I make these videos.PresidentLeever wrote:Maybe use longer clips and make it 50 games over 10 minutes instead?
The point of the video is just to cram as many games into a 10 minute frame and just pique interest of viewers to encourage them to go research more on the games they've just seen, such as on other YouTube videos and such.
Thanks! Bokan to Ippatsu is a shmup in which you play the badguys, the Doronbo gang from Yatterman (playing the game with two players has one player as Boyacky and the other as Tonzura) and you blast your way fighting against the machinations of the various protagonists of the Time Bokan series. For example, for the first two levels of the game you fight against the Yatterman team and their various robots, etc. This was actually one of the games my friend has. I own this game on the PS1. A followup shmup was Bokan Desuyo on the PS1.vic oakland wrote:Much respect! That's a lot of work!!![]()

It might be just you. There are lots of 100 games in 10 minutes videos for various consoles, and these videos prove to be rather popular. Education isn't the goal. Bringing back memories is the primary goal, and the secondary goal is to pique interest and provoke a "Hey, what was that game?" reaction. You know, like, "Oh, so there was a Tenchi Muyo puzzle game?" or "Hey, that looked like a strategy game! I love SRPGs! I'll have to look that up." Hi Greg! You seem to know Saturn imports so I have a question 4 ya!
What would you say are the top 10 best Saturn Imports that are friendly to non-Japanese speakers?

Re: 100 import-only Sega Saturn games in 10 minutes video
There are lots. It depends on what you like. Shmups and fighting games are easy to play, and there are too many of those to list. Some games such as Shadow of the Tusk and Wizardry: Llylgamyn Saga have English menus, so those are playable for those who don't understand Japanese. I can't presume to know what the "top 10 best" ones are, since that's really all subjective. I could list 10 shmups or 10 fighting games if you'd like, but you probably already know about those.MulishaSoldier929 wrote:What would you say are the top 10 best Saturn Imports that are friendly to non-Japanese speakers?

Yeah I know most of the "heavy hitters" that people always talk about(bulk slash, radiant silvergun, and what not) but I was curious as to what in your 'opinion' are the best games worth importing that anyone can play.greg wrote:There are lots. I think the 100 games in 10 minutes videos are interesting ideas, but your's suffers from the same problem most of them do: the selected video segments are not particularly interesting. I would think that with a model like this you'd want to pick rather potent scenes. Also, the amount of time given each game appears variable, which does nobody any favors.
Re: 100 import-only Sega Saturn games in 10 minutes video
Well, I didn't know about Bulk Slash until I read about it on this forum! I asked a friend about it, and he said, "Oh yeah, it's a great game." I literally had no idea about it! So aside from the big games like Elevator Action Returns, all the major shmups and such, here are a few that I think are pretty awesome but may be not very well known (and are decent to get into without knowing much Japanese): the Langrisser series, Kyuutenkai Fantastic Pinball, Asuka 120% Burning Fest, Tenchi wo Kurau II, Puyo Puyo series, Purikura Daisakusen, Magical Drop series, Wachen Roader, and Linkle Liver Story.MulishaSoldier929 wrote:Yeah I know most of the "heavy hitters" that people always talk about(bulk slash, radiant silvergun, and what not) but I was curious as to what in your 'opinion' are the best games worth importing that anyone can play.
Alright, I try to take criticism without getting defensive, but I think you may want to put things into perspective. There are way too many Saturn videos (and general Japanese import gaming videos overall) that are done by people who obviously have not spent much time playing the game, and also most likely cannot understand Japanese in order to actually play it. Without naming anyone specifically, there's one guy who just records the intro animations to games. Occasionally he tinkers around with the menus, and shows only a few minutes of games (and in the case of RPGs and such, this means just farting around with a bunch of Japanese text and not really doing anything else). So I only showed about 3 seconds of Galaxy Fraulein Yuna 3, but at least you'll now know that it's a strategy/tactics game. I looked on YT and all I could find was the opening anime that somebody recorded.marurun wrote:I think the 100 games in 10 minutes videos are interesting ideas, but your's suffers from the same problem most of them do: the selected video segments are not particularly interesting. Too many of these videos show level 1 characters doing nothing really exciting. If you watch that "65 import Saturn games video," watch it and you'll see just the very beginning of Princess Crown. Watch him walk around aimlessly talking to characters in the very beginning of the game, and just briefly face off against the guy you spar with in the very beginning of the game. I at least showed footage of an intense fight with the dragon. The guy didn't do much with Bulk Slash either aside from wandering around on the first level, apparently unaware of the copilot system. The part I showed was several levels into the game. I showed the final end boss of Assault Suits Leynos, halfway into Sakura Taisen, how to properly chain in Cotton 2, and so on.
There were only a couple games I chickened out with in this video. I haven't played most of these games to the end, but I actually played them for several hours to get to an exciting part of the game. I beat Grandia on the PS1 over 14 years ago, but I played that game for many hours over a couple of weeks to get to the part of the game that personally gave me the chills.
I also made a point to include footage of 2 player action for several games when my friend came to visit me back in September. Guardian Force, the Psikyo shmups, Radiant Silvergun, Purikura Daisakusen, and especially D&D. I re-watched the footage to find about 6 seconds worth of video for each game that had the most action. We even did some 3 player action with Mercs. Showing multiplayer fun is more interesting than just single player action, in my opinion.
I showed the animated cutscenes for some of the games because they stood out to me. I showed cutscenes of Langrisser III and Suchie Pai Dokidoki Nightmare because I really like the character designs of Satoshi Urushihara and Kenichi Sonoda respectively.
So anyway, sorry to disappoint some guys on here. This forum particularly seems to be a tough crowd. If people aren't into RPGs or SRPGs, then any footage of such games will appear uninteresting. The trick with those is that it can take 20 seconds to properly show how a move is processed in such a game. They aren't fast-paced games, and anyone who doesn't care for them will think they are boring. Some games like Melty Lancer won't seem to make much sense no matter how much footage I show, even though it is still an interesting game.
Anyhow, I don't mean to bash on that "65 import Saturn games" video too much. In it, I saw games I wasn't familiar with, so I gave it a thumbs up and complimented the guy.
