Didn't read the article. But I don't think I ever really played Diablo 2 offline. Single player in these games gets old very quickly for me.

I beat Diablo 2 offline many times, but also used character editors up the wazoo.

Diablo 2 also had 2 online modes, Open Bnet for single player toons and Closed Bnet for strictly online characters.

From my experience with Open Bnet for single player characters was pretty much summed up like this:

But closed bnet had plenty of hacked items:

Lost Vikings should have had more DRM.

I probably would've never played Diablo 2 if it was online only. I mean, I have tried it online, but I absolutely love that game just going solo. I consider it one of the greatest PC games of all time... and again, that's just judging it as a single player experience.

I have always been amazed that it can play on even extremely old/modest PCs, with or without internet, with or without a dedicated video card. It is available to almost anyone and is STILL sold in stores over 10 years after it's release (to my notice, it never went away in all that time).

IMO, D2 would not be near as popular if they limited the audience to online only.
...just another lost soul...

Why would anyone say this? It's like saying "Hey, I haven't shot my foot in three months, better start reloading!"

I'm picturing the world 20 years in the future, when kids look at discussions like this and wonder what the big deal is before they jack their brains back into the internet.

It's funny to think back on how at one point Blizzard was probably my favorite game developer in the mid-late 90s. Definitely my favorite PC developer.

When WoW came out I was so confused. "Why would I want to play an online only game? That doesn't make any sense. Well, I'll just look forward to WarCraft IV." Little did I know what was in store for the company...
