http://sploid.gizmodo.com/listening-to- ... 1464557213The final part of his speech emphasizes that science is just the means, not the endgoal. And as Open Culture notes, this was, of course, alluding to the circumstances surrounding World War II. Still, Einstein's brilliant words are just as true now as they were then, but nothing drives the point home quite like hearing the man himself speak it.
The Voice of Albert Einstein
The Voice of Albert Einstein
i had to share this with you guys. i had never heard this recording before but it gave me goosebumps. it's really strange to hear the man's voice after being aware of him as a historical figure for so long. it's a very moving and fascinating speech, too.

Read A Brief History of Time by Hawking if you haven't already. Buy a copy, as you're going to want to read it multiple times.
One of the first things he asks you to ponder is "What did God do before he created the Universe?". Wrap your head around that one for a while as that's just the beginning of one of the most thought provoking books ever written,

One of my favorite things to do at work when I have downtime is to search for things like this. For example, this is Tolkien reading the one ring poem:

Very cool. I love science.
The idea is (among Christian theology, not Stephen Hawking) that God literally got bored and lonely. So he created a universe full of living beings.Luke wrote:One of the first things he asks you to ponder is "What did God do before he created the Universe?".

The Book of Boredom. You can't really say it's older than Genesis, since time didn't exist and all.o.pwuaioc wrote:In what theological text does this idea occur?BurningDoom wrote:Very cool. I love science.

I don't know, I'm not a good enough Christian to have all my important verses memorized like I should. It's also supposedly the same reason we were created in God's likeness.o.pwuaioc wrote:In what theological text does this idea occur?BurningDoom wrote:Very cool. I love science.

It's not in Genesis. It's in another book. They also talk about Satan's fall from grace (when he was Lucifer) in that part, IIRC.

Yeah, before Genesis there was really only the entire, all-encompassing universe, sometimes called the Master System.Ack wrote:You can't really say it's older than Genesis, since time didn't exist and all.

That's not any book of the Bible, then, since the Bible never mentions Satan's fall from grace...BurningDoom wrote:I don't know, I'm not a good enough Christian to have all my important verses memorized like I should. It's also supposedly the same reason we were created in God's likeness.

I'm curious as to where you heard this, since I haven't heard it before.

Here's a few verses that Google brought up:
Isaiah 14:12-15 ESV / 111 helpful votes
“How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit.
Revelation 12:7-9
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
Ezekiel 28:14
You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
Ezekiel 28:15
You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you.
Ezekiel 28:17
Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you.
