In general, the difference is what is exaggerated in the characters and for what audiences...

83. The Peace Keepers (SNES)(Beat 'Em Up)

I actually beat this a few days ago but didn't post because I'm continuing to run through and take alternate paths in an attempt to complete the game. The Peace Keepers is the US localization of the third Rushing Beat beat 'em up series in Japan. It's actually quite impressive in that it offers hidden characters, multiple routes through the game, alternate endings, hidden story segments, and even the death of a character if you know how to get it. But unfortunately the game was also hobbled by a horrendous localization which ranges from poor to just flat out weird at times and helped ruin what could have been a wonderful hidden gem.

That's not to say that Peace Keepers is perfect. There are times where hit detection can be shoddy and strange, and the game overrelies on throws for regular enemies. Get the throw mechanics down, and you'll almost never have to worry about another normal enemy again. Bosses are another deal entirely, and while some are entertaining fights, there are a couple that are more annoying than interesting. The bridge level boss, Dervish, stands out as the worst example.

But then enter Jaleco USA; they have a wonderful product in Japan, and then decide to localize it to death in the US: the plot has been torn out and replaced by a mess of a tale involving some kind of Shakespearean wannabe who apparently makes mutants and is randomly evil for no real understandable reason. Story sequences were cut out in odd places, character portraits were changes from the anime-style of the Japanese release, frames of animation were dropped, and in a few cases characters had their skin tones modified or entirely changed. At least one hidden character had his ethnicity changed from a white guy to a black man with some kind of book deal. Names were also changed in accordance with earlier games in the series(which are now unrelated due to their localizations). But most damning is that the vast majority of music was cut out, so most of the game has a little background noise and that's all.

But despite these problems, there's a lot going on. Levels have interactive elements, such as pits, landmines, rolling boulders, electric fences, and in one level there is a helicopter that attacks the player. There are branching paths to take which lead to different routes through portions of the game, and while all routes lead to the same final area, choosing different characters can lead to alternate story segments and special dialogue. It's even possible to kill one of the characters, Prokop. And when you get bored of the game, there's a vs mode that allows up to four players via the multitap.

It's a shame that Peace Keepers suffered so much, because there's a lot to praise about its design. This is a game that could have been highly sought after by collectors and beat 'em up fans for its large amount of content, but with the changes, it isn't nearly as good. I kind of wish I could get an English translation for Rushing Beat Shura, its original NTSC-J version, and play that on a repro cart instead.

They even put my friend Hootie McBoob to shame. At least Ivy from Soul Calibur was fairly full figured, but these gals are tiny in every area but one.
They must be from L.A.

48. Pikmin 3 Wii U *NEW*
49. Parappa the Rapper PSP *NEW*

Two new updates, and 2 which I had very different experiences with.

Pikmin 3 was wonderful throughout. It's a toss-up between this and Pikmin 1 for my favourite in the series. Each has advantages over the other - I love the simple scope (and the timer) of the original, the more open levels and the better battling controls. However, I adore the multitasking potential in 3, I find the slightly more tactical battling interesting, and I find the structure to be quite enjoyable too. The game is full of charm, I love the new characters and found their banter in between levels amusing. I like how new abilities are spread out across the game, with the last pikmin type coming very shortly before the final level. I also kind of like how you need to take some of every pikmin type along with you just in case, although I found myself wishing I could have a few more than 100 now that I have 5 types to manage (I thought the same in Pikmin 2). The new timer system is kind of pointless, as it makes you rush around early on to find fruit, but later on you can afford to spend ages exploring without worry - even though the last boss took me 4 in game days to take down (it's a pretty epic final encounter for sure), I still had 30 days+ worth of food left to survive with, and I hadn't even come close to gathering all of the fruit yet (47/66 was my final tally).

I'd recomend Pikmin 3 whole heartedly to any Wii U owners. It's my favourite game on the system so far, and one of my votes for my favourite games beaten this year for sure.

Parappa the Rapper was a game I beat for Together Retro, and in fact, it's one I nominated in the first place. Despite that, my opinions of it ended up being fairly negative. I'll copy them from the TR thread into here:
I finished this game today. I don't know what I think of it in all honesty.

If I felt it WORKED properly, I'd love it. The game has a lot going for it - cool art style, catchy music and the freestyling system which even now is pretty damn unique amongst music games - a music game that lets you deviate from the simple simon says structure is awesome.

However, it's all let down down by the god-awful timing of the game. Even having beat the game, any level in it can kick my ass sideways because I have no idea what timing it expects of me. I pretty much got through the game freestyling all the way through as I felt it easy to get good ratings doing that then just simply copying a pattern back. I don't like to toot my own trumpet, but rhythm gaming is a genre I'm generally pretty damn good at - I've completed Gitaroo Man on master, gold ranked Gorilla mode on Donkey Konga, beaten Guitar Hero 3 on Hard, beaten Elite Beat Agents on Hard Rock mode and gotten all 50 perfects in Rhythm Paradise - but I needed to retry the first level of this game multiple times, and it doesnt really make any sense to me why.

The game has some other flaws too sure - it's crazy short at only 6 levels, all of which would be like 2 minutes long if I didn't have to keep retrying them. The lyrics to the songs are god awful too, although it's kind of in a good-bad way I suppose.

I sound negative about this game, and I guess I kind of am, but it's one I really want to like, and one which I think does a lot of things right. It just falls down on one aspect - it's a shame its the absolute most crucial one.

Next up: Maybe Final Fantasy VII? I'll probably give Power Stone Collection a try as well. First off though, I'll be rounding up all the remaining fruit in Pikmin 3.

tl;dr: I have plenty of complaints, yet I'm still a sucker for MK games.
It's such a perfect universe for beat 'em ups too. I really, really wish we could get a Shaolin Monks sequel, and they can go ahead and throw in DC characters too if they want. I had the good fortune to play Shaolin Monks with a friend, which made a game I already loved even more awesome. Honestly, I can't think of many 3D beat 'em ups that are just plain FUN the way that game was, maybe Lollipop Chainsaw. And the boss fights are some of the most interesting ones you'll ever see in a beat 'em up.

I saw it.

In the theater.

The weekend it opened.

Gullible was I.

I can tell you that was *not* from the movie. It's probably from some Internet comedy video somewhere.

I had it on VHS as a kid, and watched it more than once. The 90s were a hell of a drug.

It's Super Mario Brothers Free-running Edition. I'm pretty sure that's not the actual title, but it's from youtube.

I saw SMB in the theaters too haha. I will say this though... it's at least better than the Double Dragon movie!

I must admit, I'm a total sucker for video game movies. I've got a pretty good collection going.
