Recently I bought Starfox64, and after seeing a cheap rumble pack I thought I ought to try it out being the first game that supported it. I have to say that the main difference I noticed was the comically loud noise it made.
Last week I picked up a dreamcase controller, VMU and rumble pack. Mainly I wanted the VMU and a spare controller, but I was reasonable interested in playing JSR with the rumble pack, and yet again I actually had to stop trying to beat the mission before I noticed that the thing was working or not.
This made me ponder on how much difference rumble features make to the experience as a whole. I remember the first time I got use a rumble controller, it was my friends dual shock, I played Gran Turismo and RE(2?) and was pretty impressed but now I dont even notice it working.
Would you miss it if it dissappeared from your controllers?

It's more of a luxury than a necessity.. But gaming as a whole is a luxury too. So no, I wouldn't particularly miss it, but it's a good (optional) feature to have.

I have hated rumble with a passion ever since it first came out. Completely worthless. I can't understand how it is supposed to make the experience more "real"...it does nothing for me except take me OUT of the experience.

I didn't care about rumble in Starfox 64, and I still dont care about it. It's neither enhanced an experience, nor has it proved more useful than a stupid gimmick, like finding chams in Skies of Arcadia.

To argue against myself I thought NMH used it pretty well when looking for buried stuff. The vibrations were very weak and easy to miss if you werent paying attention and served as a useful gameplay mechanic. It was also pretty cool whenever silvia rang, the speaker on the remote provded the sound as well as vibrating with the ringing.

its different for me. i find it not completely necessary. i dont find a use for the add on ones for systems like the dreamcast and n64. and in thought it shouldnt matter. but when i picked up a copy of front mission 4 for the ps2 and i destroyed an enemy i relized right away that the small rumble that im used to in front mission 3 didnt come happn. for some reason i was fully disapointed, and i still am. its probally the only game where i notice the rumble. the only other reason i find it to my advantage is that it gives a little more wight to the ps2 controler. for some reason i dont like light controlers. dont get me wrong i dont like overly heavy controler either (points at first xbox controler). and one more thing i love it in final fantasy 8 just to make fun of how much it can rumble durring a summon lol.

I'm kind of impartial to rumble itself, but I like the weight it adds to the controllers for consoles like the PS1/2 and Xbox.

Not needed but they feel best on modern shooters.
I had been thinking about getting a rumble pack to sit in my second, unused vmu space on my main dreamcast controller to add weight to it. I still think the DC controller feels very cheap and fragile compared to sega's older console controllers. Though, from your post, it seems like it's not a very strong vibration for you to even notice at first? I might just finally go for another vmu.

The rumble feature does not immerse me in a game at all. I find the rumbling to a burden because it can make you miss a strike in a game like Virtua Fighter and any Virtua Fighter fan knows the feelings of losing a good fight over a missed timed button command.

yah i think you should go with another vmu. i agree the the DC controler feels abit cheep. but when i put a vmu in it i felt better. i think the rumble pack might make it feel over weight with the other vmu in it while an extra vmu might be just enougth to make you feel beter. its just what i think though.Citizin wrote:Not needed but they feel best on modern shooters.
