Does the 360 Warranty cover second-hand consoles?

Post by philipofmacedon »

So here's a story for you guys.

A friend of mine is on his third 360. Whenever his unit dies he usually buys a new one. I think he trashed his first one, but he had his second sitting around the house. We were all going to shoot guns, because that's what we do sometimes after church on Sunday, and he figured that it'd be cool to blast apart his dead 360. I convinced him to forgo the momentary pleasure of punishing that piece of Microsoft technology and let me have it instead.

So my question is this, can I send this back to Microsoft and get it fixed or replaced. Supposedly it has the RRoD, which I hope to confirm once I borrow a controller.

I know that he's an active gold member on live. Will it screw things up for him I claim it's mine and try and send it back? Is Microsoft somehow keeping tabs on who owns these machines when they connect to live? Do I need to make a dummy Windows Live ID and silver account to do this?

I assume there must be people out there who've found acquired dead 360s from other people and tried this. But I can't have it screwing up his account in any way.

If anyone's tried something like this I'd appreciate the input.

As far as I know, if it's a RRoD and the console has never been opened they'll take it. But that being said, I had a second-hand 360 that I kept trying to get repaired and they would never send me the information. So, I don't know.

I bought 360's off the STREETS man and they had the RROD

Got them fixed and flipped them on ebay and craigslist. Even traded one for a Wii.

So yes they will fix them even if you got them from your neighborhood rock head!

It can't hurt to try. They're hardly going to punish him for buying 3 360's...
In Europe it's illegal to force re-sale limits on consumer goods. So it shouldn't matter. As long as you have never opened the console or the tamper proofs haven't been - well - tampered with. It shouldn't be a problem.

a buddy of mine used to get broken ones off of ebay. He would then actually buy a 360 arcade, swap them and return it to a place like walmart saying it didn't work because they have no idea when it comes to that stuff. Made quite a bit of spending money.

I acutally have one thats on its last legs giving me the unplayable disc error. I'm going to try to put a new laser in it, but if that doesn't work.... trip to walmart?
