Is it worth it to upgrade to a newer PSP?
Is it worth it to upgrade to a newer PSP?
I have an original fat PSP. I love my little handheld. I use it mostly for casual gaming, listening to music and watching an occassional movie. Would I notice much of an improvement if I got a new PSP with more memory and a better screen?
Is my old PSP worth much on resale? It is in like new condition and is complete with all the cords, instructions and even the original box.

The only major differences in the newer (2000 and 3000) models is that you can use Skype and there's TVOut. If that makes a difference. Also note that if it matters to you, the 3000 is so far unable to run homebrew.

Homebrew is a non-issue for me, cuz I'll probably move to the GP2X or the Pandora, possibly the latter. But my question is this: I have a model 1000 PSP and want a 3000. Should I go for it ASAP? I ask due to the issue with the screen.noiseredux wrote:The only major differences in the newer (2000 and 3000) models is that you can use Skype and there's TVOut. If that makes a difference. i haven't seen the 3000 yet, but I like the D-Pad on my slim is 8,000,000 times better than the one on my 1000. i may be exaggerating, but seriously, i can't hardly stand to use my phat PSP because of the crap D-Pad.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

The whole 3000 screen issue would worry me. If I were going to upgrade it'd be to the 2000 or I'd just wait for whatever the next model is that fixes the screen.

Just knowing that it is there is more than enough to put me off. I've tried a student of mine's PSP-3000 and noticed it straight away. It's slightly better than the PSP-1000 but I don't think it's worth buying if you already have a PSP-1000.
The PSP-3000 felt cheap and crap. The face buttons didn't feel overly different to my button mod on the original (which cost nothing btw, just spare cardboard and some time). The UMD drive door is flimsy. Not a patch on the original's sturdy mechanical door. The original PSP can do 'tv-out' now through custom firmware AND it let's you control the PSP with a seperate controller. As of now the PSP-3000 cannot support homebrew.
All in all the PSP-1000 is cheaper, more capable and does everything that the PSP-3000 does thanks to custom 5.00 firmware AND it's display is progressive instead of interlaced.
I wouldn't have the PSP-3000 (aka a thinly veiled attempt to slow the rampant piracy problem the PSP has. Masking the revised motherboard that is currently unhackable with the promise of a shiny new screen that is arguably worse than the original) even if you paid me to swap my PSP-1000.
Maybe if sony actually revised the PSP with, y'know, features that are actually usable. Rather than taking things away all the time. It seems that Sony has this attitude that less is more despite charging more for it. That just doesn't wash well with me. The same reason Sony piss me off with the PS3. They keep removing features without lowering the price. So the people who weren't absolutely idiotic and bought the PS3 at launch have got a worse console just because they didn't buy into the idiot-wagon and ate up all the bullshit that Kaz fed them - Bent over backwards waving their £400 saying Do me Kaz Hirai, I'm your bitch.
Don't even get me started on the 'six-axis', six axis? As far as I was aware there was only 3 axis in 3D space. XYZ... Or does Sony exist in some sort of parallel universe where the six-axis controls time, hyperspace and donuts. Because I have no idea where these other three god-damn axis have come from...
