I personally only remember one part where Yorda's AI was an issue (I needed her to stand on a switch in an open garden like area). I also remember one time thwere I felt I was fighting against the games controls, but it's an issue I blame on the camera angle rather than the controls themselves (I need to jump and grab a chain, but it was at an awkward angle to jump to).
Personally I find myself hard pressed to choose which I prefer between Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. I feel that SotC was better in terms of gameplay, yet I find myself thinking back on Ico more warmly.

Re: Ordered 8 PS2 Essentials
I didn't have a single problem with controls or AI. Maybe I got lucky. I think I played it twice. After maybe 10 minutes I found everything to be quite easily manipulable. It's also worth noting that the point of the entire game is that she isn't supposed to be very sharp and you have to lead her along. I don't feel like that makes it a flaw, it just means you didn't like it.

If they removed the combat and ghostly enemies I'd be willing to give Ico another chance.
Every time you go to a new platform, flip a switch, or -heaven forbid- walk to the other end of the room, those damned monsters would pop out and you'd get into another "hammer the square button" combat sequence.
Soooo yeah. I don't care how artsy the game supposedly is or how people drool over it. I'm not going to waste my time since I wasn't having any fun.

Here's the thing: Yorda is like a terrible girlfriend. You love her, but she won't listen, she won't follow, and she hangs out with some terrible characters that are always trying to pull her away from you and into some black abyss. You will at times have to physically drag her to get her to do anything at all. And decision making? None at all, so you end up having to be the one who gets confrontational. And as for you, you're saddled with her, trying to see if you can escape the dank pit of despair you've been thrown into with her "help."
The morale of the game? Women totally suck, but we have to rely on them to fix life's problems, even if they're generally useless about it.
ICO is a very mysogynistic game.

At least she's more involved than the girl from Shadow of the Colossus

Ico and SotC are both fantastic games. But if I read one more review that describes them as a once-in-a-lifetime transcendental "emotional" experience I am gonna scream. Same thing goes for Mother/EarthBound!

I find it a little aggravating too.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Ico and SotC are both fantastic games. But if I read one more review that describes them as a once-in-a-lifetime transcendental "emotional" experience I am gonna scream. Same thing goes for Mother/EarthBound!
I think people just get a little excited and carried away talking about those games and end up overselling it. To a lesser extent, you see the same thing with Majora's Mask and Silent Hill 2.
All of them are excellent games, of course, but people need to calm down.

I think its adorable when people love a game so much that they get too excited about it. If they were preaching religion at me it would be irritating, but seeing someone argue that their game is the best game ever invented and is some transcendental experience is just endearing to me.AppleQueso wrote: All of them are excellent games, of course, but people need to calm down.

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are amazing. They're both once-in-a-lifetime transcendental emotional experiences that everyone should enjoy.
In that respect, they remind me of such great games as Earthbound, Silent Hill 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. You aren't a gamer if you haven't experienced these games at least 5 times each.

See, i don't find Ico to have any significant emotional impact, especially compared to stuff like SotC.alienjesus wrote:Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are amazing. They're both once-in-a-lifetime transcendental emotional experiences that everyone should enjoy.
