PC build thread
Re: PC build thread
Case speaker sounds useful. I should get one of those. Guess I'm lucky that I didn't need it when assembling mine.

It's useful when diagnosing why your computer wont start for sure. It's how I figured out I had a dead motherboard.ZenErik wrote:Case speaker sounds useful. I should get one of those. Guess I'm lucky that I didn't need it when assembling mine.

beeps worked! It was a RAM issue. Now the manual said you must have a stick of RAM in slot A2 or B2. I had it in A2. But the beeps told me it wasn't detecting RAM. Switched to B2 and now I see a BIOS screen!

But do you have a bad RAM slot? That's a potential concern.

Doubtful. DIMMS need to be populated a specific way to ensure proper functionality.ZenErik wrote:But do you have a bad RAM slot? That's a potential concern.

Re: PC build thread
I've now got a new issue. 3 times I've tried to install Windows, and 3 times it's failed. Twice I was attempting on the 3TB Western Digital HDD - which I bought brand new yesterday. Then I thought maybe it's defective, so I swapped in the SDD (I don't have enough Sata cables to keep them both plugged in right now) and I got a BSOD.

Re: PC build thread
Run a ram test. There are a number on this, though there should also be one on the Windows 7 DVD in the System Recovery section.
One question though...do you know if your motherboard is at stock settings? If it's been used, it's possible that the auto-detect settings are being overridden. RAM settings would be a common thing to have been adjusted, since SPD settings tend to be very conservative.
You may want to try resetting things to default, or at least make sure that RAM timings/etc are all being obtained automatically.

Re: PC build thread
after some Googling... yeah it was a RAM issue. I don't get it, but I swapped in 2GB stick and it installed fine. I'm posting from my new Win7 machine.
