Re: Games Beaten 2013
Duuuude Serious Sam is a good time. It was the first FPS I played that had WASD control (back in 2007 on Gametap
)
I've completed The First Encounter. I remember the first level on that. I saw something way far out in the distance, and I ran for about 10 minutes towards it, the map didn't end there. Turns out it was some sort of item or enemy that was there. That's how deep the game is. You can find all sorts of stuff if you go off the beaten path. It's also a good point to know when you see an ammo backpack in an open field in either the First or Second encounter, it's a 10 minute arena battle -- fire up that cannon!
I wasn't all that impressed with SS2. Maybe because it ran terribly on my old PC. Plus a lot of what made the first 2 games fun was taken out.

The first time I played an FPS that used WASD I thought it was the dumbest control style I had ever seen. Coming off Doom and Wolf3D, which used what seemed to me logical arrow key movement, I couldn't understand why someone would decline to use buttons with directions printed on them for letters.ExedExes wrote:Duuuude Serious Sam is a good time. Re: Games Beaten 2013
Yeah, I had massive issues with Quake when it first came out because of the controls, it is how I saw my older brother playing it, but could not get into it. I tried playing with the arrow keys but it felt so limited that I never finished Quake until earlier this year.BoringSupreez wrote:The first time I played an FPS that used WASD I thought it was the dumbest control style I had ever seen. As for Serious Sam, I enjoyed the First Encounter, but found the games so repetitive that when I got to the Second Encounter, I was well over the gameplay.

Yeah, I've got it for the PC and the sound is incredible. I HATE the ghost/run through a collapsing tunnel level. That level gives me a hard time every time I play it.Gamerforlife wrote: Amazing game, but Return of the King was even better. It's one of my favorite games of all time

So I have tried playing this a few times, each time I just could not get into it. It has some massive flaws. The frame rates issues, weapons are massively unbalanced, it becomes repetitive even within the same stage, it is really buggy, there is constant 'holes' between where polygons meet. I feel it could have ran a bit smoother if they did not bother with things like rag doll physics.
Despite all the flaws there is an alright shooter in there, you can see they were ambitious by what they did with the sequel. Its flaws keep it form being anything other than average.

*New - Ratchet & Clank Into the Nexus - PS3 - New*
Well, this is pretty much a traditional R & C game for those of you who didn't like the weird direction the last two games went in. Overall, it's about as good as you would expect an Insomniac made R & C game to be. It's a bit shorter though, and it feels leaner and more focused as they've cut out a lot of the various side activities from previous games like racing, ship combat, etc, etc. Though there is still of course an obligatory Clank mini-game. And you'll still do a lot of traditional R & C stuff like upgrade weapons, find gold bolts, fight in combat arenas, do some light puzzle solving, do lots of platforming, fly to different planets, get skill points, find specs for the Ryno, play through Challenge Mode, etc, etc. While it doesn't quite give you everything you got in previous games, this still feels like a proper R & C game, unlike Quest for Booty, which just felt like DLC. I feel like the stuff that's been cut out is stuff most players probably won't care much about. I feel like Into the Nexus strips Ratchet & Clank down to the core elements that make it work, while removing much of the fluff that is typically used to pad these games out to make them longer.
The weapon selection here is smaller than previous games, and it's pretty much just weapons from previous games recycled with new names and gimmicks. But the new twists they've put on them are pretty funny. The winterizer is pretty hilarious as it plays Christmas carols while turning enemies into snowman. The Mr. Zircon weapon had been altered so that when fully upgraded, his whole family fights with you. This is one of the coolest things about the game as they actually carry on conversations with each other while also commenting on pretty much every thing you do and occasionally insulting you in the process. It's really entertaining. There wasn't a single moment during my playthrough that I didn't have them accompany me into battle.
The writing and humor in this game is top notch. There are some truly clever and hilarious lines in the game that surprised me. Some from the aforementioned Zircon family, some from random enemies you fight, and some from the battle arena announcer. The game comes very close to breaking the fourth wall at times, but doesn't quite go over that line, but there are moments you can tell the game is winking at you. The overall presentation and production value and voice acting in these games have become truly impressive. It doesn't surprise me that a movie is in the works. The game actually comes with a trailer for it. The story feels like an epilogue for the series, yet still leaves a door open at the end for further sequels, much like the Sly Cooper games always do. There's definitely a sense of closure here though and a reverence paid to previous games, so it wouldn't shock me if this were the last one...but I doubt it. This one has a female villain in it, which was a nice change of pace for the series I thought. That one change really gave this installment a bit of a different feel than other R & C games I've played. The game's opening chapter, which is like an extended tutorial, was really good and quickly drew me into the game, and she was definitely part of that.
So yeah basically, it's Ratchet & Clank. You know what you're getting if you have played these before. There's a little less content in this installment, but it's priced appropriately at 30 dollars and for that price you get far more content than Quest for Booty gave us. That game felt like DLC. Into the Nexus is definitely a full fledged Ratchet & Clank game, just one a bit smaller in scope than previous entries. Plus, you get Quest for Booty tossed in for free, though I think it sucks that they couldn't patch in trophies for that game as an added bonus. Oh well
