Re: need help deciding
Well if Cross was instead titled Final Fantasy Whatever, it would have sold millions more and been loved by all. That's what irritates me. The game is great. It's the title that ruined it. The irony is that I tend to ignore Final Fantasy games by default, so I would have missed out on this one.
Re: need help deciding
Guess I'm lucky that I played Chrono Cross first. I think Chrono Trigger is one of the best games ever, and honestly, I have a feeling chrono cross would have let me down had I gone into it comparing it to chrono trigger.
Re: need help deciding
Actually I played it first as well. Maybe that's what it comes down to. I soon after emulated CT, and it was still amazing.dlmvii wrote:Guess I'm lucky that I played Chrono Cross first. I ended up playing CC about 10 years after I played CT, and knew extensively that it wasn't intended to be a sequel like GoW2 is the sequel to GoW. So I basically went into it with the knowledge that, while there might be some references to CT, on the whole it was a completely standalone and separate game. And I enjoyed it.

Re: need help deciding
I enjoyed what I played of Chrono Cross. Unfortunately for me, it became one of those games that got pushed to the side and never picked up again. While it was fun, I feel that the story was a bit of a mess, and the battle music got REALLY old - which is just like every other RPG out there, of course.
I know I'm comparing apples and oranges here, but the genius of Trigger's story was in its simplicity. Cross just was too jumbled for my taste. (I only played about 15 hours, so I have no idea if all the loose ends were tied up at the game's ending.)
I'd still recommend it over buying a Gamecube - just for the financial aspect of it.
All this talk is really bumming me out since it looks like I'll never see that copy of Chrono Trigger I bought online. Why couldn't they break into my mailbox when something a little less valuable was in it?

This feels like the Secret of mana/Evermore saga.Gamerforlife wrote:I understand the feelings people have about Chrono Cross. It's great on its own merits, but it's not like the original at all. The story at least ties into it well though

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. Well, Evermore was not part of the Seiken Densetsu series. It was wholely developed by the American branch of Square. It had a similar combat system, and the obvious name similarity, but they aren't part of the same series.Droid party wrote:This feels like the Secret of mana/Evermore saga.Gamerforlife wrote:I understand the feelings people have about Chrono Cross. Re: need help deciding
i will say this now i have technically played chrono cross before trigger but only for a half an hour in my younger days where i was just starting off. i knew of the trigger legacy back then, though. i started to get in to trigger 2 years ago. i dont think trigger will hinder me from enjoying cross. i love complex storys (even if they sometimes make no sence), i know this cause i love xenogears. and i already know that cross is not even close to trigger. but with that in mind i dont think i will be hindered. also i wanted to know if maybe playing radical dreamers might conect the games better. its actually a good game and it is part of the chrono story lines..but its part of a different universe....i just didnt finish it and i am waiting for cross to come in the mail now. BTW, I WANT TO SAY I LOVE THE Seiken Densetsu OF THE PAST. im not too much into the newer games of the series and i know i dont like evermore that much. but 2 and 3 are sooo good!

This is off topic, but it's a shame that Evermore's fantastic score was wasted on such a mediocre game. Some of those ambient sounds were downright creepy.MrPopo wrote:Well, Evermore was not part of the Seiken Densetsu series. It was wholely developed by the American branch of Square. Quick off-topic here: These boards are fantastic. I've actually never experienced a messageboard that is so cool, laid back, and absent of all the stupid shit that usually makes me abandon the website.
On- Topic:
Been playing games forever, like all of you, but somehow I never played Chrono Trigger/Cross.
I don't know why, I just never got into them for some reason. Obviously I've heard everyone over the years call Trigger one of the best games ever made, etc. So you guys think I should pick up the DS rerelease that's dropping soon?
It almost seems daunting, you know? I'm almost afraid to play it after hearing how amazing it is all these years. It can't possibly live up to what people say...
