Need help with Tomb Raider Anniversary

Post by Scooter »

I must be getting old. I'm just not good at pulling off "special moves" in games any more and the curmudgeon in me rails, "why can't I just keep shooting until the beast goes down?!"

I really thought I would enjoy Anniversary since I've had countless hours of enjoyment playing all previous TR games, well, aside from Angel of Darkness (ugh!). And Anniversary HAS been fun except where a boss level REQUIRES you to master a special move, in my case the "Adrenalin Dodge". The T-Rex fight caused me hours and hours of repetition. I finally got through it and found by setting myself up very deliberately I could pull off the move and FINALLY got past the T-Rex. Still, I would have preferred to just shoot and shoot until the thing was dead. Why shouldn't I have the option to play like a worn out old game hack shoot-shoot-shooting until it's dead and leave the special moves to the punk kids who still have some dexterity left in their digits?

Well, I've been again enjoying the game until recently. I got to the latest tomb where I have to fight the pair of centaurs. I've figured out how to dodge their worst attacks and how to get them so enraged they rush me. I do the special move yet as I'm executing it the OTHER little douche bag bowls me over and ruins my headshot. And, since I broke down and read the strategy guide apparently if I can pull off the special move that only freezes the centaur and THEN I need to also yank his shield away while he is frozen with my magnetic zip line (who would ever think of doing that?) and then protect the removed shield while doing the same moves on the remaining centaur. Bottom line: I just don't have the skills. I'd much prefer to run in circles like a dork shooting and shooting until the guys go down. And I would suspect that there are more bosses later on that require the same skill. It just sucks that one stupid unmasterable move (at least in my case) precludes me from enjoying and/or finishing the game.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how the get past this boss level or this stupid special move?

What's so hard about the adrenaline dodge? The action slows down, you dive backwards or sideways, the targeting reticule centers on your target, you fire. It's pretty simple

Maybe a visual aid is what you need. Works for some gamers. There are plenty of youtube videos for that fight. Perhaps seeing someone else do the adrenaline dodge can help you with the timing.

For the record, I hated the centaur fight, but not because I have trouble with the adrenaline dodge. Just the cheapness of it. With the stupid random hits from those fireballs. I could rant about a bunch of stuff with that game. Badly designed areas, crappy camera, cheap enemies, but I never had an issue with the adrenaline dodge and I thought the T-Rex fight was excellent, beat it on my first try.

Well then, I officially hate you then.

Kidding aside, the problem with the centaurs is that as I'm executing the move, the one I'm not targeting knocks me sideways interupting my "dodge". I must be doing something wrong. I know I could execute the move if I wasn't interupted by the second beast since I FINALLY learned how to do it during the T-Rex fight. The same technique doesn't seem to work here though.
