Unfortunately a lot of console games just seem to aim for 30 FPS. Some don't even seem to try that.

I mean there's good technical reasons for that, but still. Two steps forward, one step back.

Dont forget that the PS4 and Xbox One still have games that wont be in 1080p or rock solid 60fps, in this era, i think it should be a standard.

I've seen a lot of people suggest that games start including graphic settings options, so you can say, turn off fancy shadow effects or whatever to get a better framerate.

The only times I noticed 60fps is when there are games when shooting bullets or things exploding seems fast and very smooth with no frame drops which I enjoy, but playing something like GTA 5, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Last of Us, Uncharted... do you notice anything?

Plus how can you tell if its 30fps or 60 , do you eyeball it?

@isiolia

Do you know of a way if I can tell if my laptop or TV is VA, TN or IPS?

On a PC, some games will have something that shows the FPS that you can toggle, or you can run a benchmark or something. Consoles...you would probably have to do video capture or something to see (what Digital Foundry does I guess.

Largely though, there's just a different feel to it.

Panel type, generally, you'd need to see the specs. While IPS panels in laptops are becoming more common, many in the past were TN due to lower power use of that tech.

One of the noticeable things with TN panels is the degree of color shift. Look at them head on, and you get the correct colors (or as correct as the panel can do). Move slightly off-axis, and colors change. Move to an extreme enough angle, and colors flip. An IPS panel won't do that, which is part of the reason that you see widespread use of IPS panels in tablets despite the power draw.

Thanks a lot , looks like my macbook screen is TN as brightness and contrast changes heavily by changing the angle. I am surprised that my iPad is IPS even though it holds a long time of use (10hr) , you would think they would use TN to save on battery power.

EVERY GAME IS NOTICEABLE.

Many games have console commands, for those that dont programs like FRAPS. I can always can tell by eye if my game drops in FPS to 30 (I use Vsync), so I enable FRAPS and low and behold it has dropped, I think overclock my card or tweak settings.

The worst kind of FPS drop I have seen is 4 local multiplayer on Call of Duty Zombies... looks like you are playing under strobe light
