My father is one of those people that think video games are for kids and not adults and he once and a will say something about it but never becomes an issue.

When I hear my coworkers talking about how great Step It Up was or how the latest Fast and Furious movie kicked ass, it makes me happy that I don't share their interests. Seriously, how can the watchers of such ridiculousness even think to mock me for my gaming?

They don't really know about my gaming because I only speak to them when necessary. I don't associate myself with people who regularly use the N-word and preach their uber-conservative values to anyone who won't tell them to fuck off. (Just to give you all an idea: The other day I heard a 26 year old single mother - who just left her husband for a lesbian and makes about 25K a year - saying she loved Bill O'Reilly. :x )

I also believe that the average person has lousy taste in everything - music, movies, games, etc. Seriously, how else can a band like Nickelback be so successful?

Man there's nothing on the radio down there but classic rock and jesus. Not just regular jesus either, but crazy apocalyptic jesus. I swear to god too, one weekend we heard Sweet Home Alabama on the radio 4 times in 2 hours. Weird place. So weird someone wrote a book about it(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What%27s_t ... ith_Kansas). Anyway, I hope you at least have a good jazz station in Kansas City. They still play jazz in Kansas City, right?
Yeah that would probably be 98.9. The only thing it's good for is Johnny Dare in the morning, and weekday nights they have The Pit, which is actually modern metal. The only other thing I've ever found worth listening to is 96.5 at certain points on the weekend where they either have some techno shit for an hour, or when they play a full album from some obscure but refreshing band.

There's a reason why I superglued the backplate of my mp3 player to my dash, so I can mount it easily in my car.

I don't seem to catch a lot of flack for being a gamer, I guess since I'm still at an age where it's "appropriate" (I'm 18.) I do run into other gamers every now and then, enough to prevent me from thinking I'm a member of some very esoteric group bordering on extinction. Even if people did criticize me cause they thought it was childish or uncool, though, I wouldn't care - enjoying video games isn't inherently wrong and I'm old enough to choose my hobbies from this point forward.

I get a few looks like "hmmm he'll grow out of it...."
but actually a lot of OOoooOOO's and ahhhh's from my age group.
I have a big issue when I say I'm into gaming and they assume that means WOW.

I don't play WOW, I try to make it clear, but it's all the same to someone who's lost a friend or relationship to it.

What really ticks me off is getting flak from other gamers. Just because i play games in 2d suddenly im the geek while the douche that spends hours on Age of Conan is somehow not a geek. Why some people think just because a game is few a years old it's not worth playing is beyond me.

From the sounds of this discussion, it sounds like I should be thanking my lucky starts that I have a good friend with which I game with on a regular basis (we are in our forties). I wouldn't miss one of our gaming sessions for anything. We have fairly different religious and political points of view, but we are close friends and always have a blast gaming together. I too prefer to multi-player together in person than on-lining.

I am a software engineer. I rip on other people I work with for not playing games, or not playing them enough...

I am upfront about playing games and being nerdy. Anyone that looks down on the fact that I play games is not someone I ever want to talk to, so there is no reason to hide what I do.

I seem to get it alot more when i talk about specifics of Atari Jaguar, or Japanese Sega Saturn Games, or Atari Lynx,

usually, when i talk about cult machines, even gamers may think im a freak, thats 1 topic i almost avoid,

not really because of the looks bothering me to much, but because its like talking algebra to a crack head, you never actually get questions or responses, just a lost face.

retro gamers and especially cult gamers "non-nes or super nes" are the more rare breed, and the ones more prone to discrimination over someone who plays 360.

ive even had wierd looks, about 2 years after the 360 came out, i tell people im still playing regular xbox and they give me some look like im a thing from the past, like im a poor man who couldnt afford a 360 or something.

i tell them i play halo online still and i get the "they still do that online?" question.

now that ive had a 360 i guess im more "in"
There are 3 things I don't believe in, politics and math.

Well I think videogames are for younger people, i dont think when they make call of duty they have the 40 year old in mind...I think it reaches a max of 35

mostly its like 14-27 maybe as target market...
videogames is made for younger people, its like an older guy enjoying "goose-bumps" book series...its nothing wrong, its just not his age i guess

there is games for adults like soduko or chess, maybe card games, as videogames. But its hard to see 38 year old enjoying mario galaxy and getting excited over it. If he does, suit yourself, but others might take the wrong idea.
