Does any one have a clue why music often starts looping and then dissapears alltogether when I play Typing of the Dead (the US version) on my PAL Dreamcast? Other than that the game works fine, the music just gets stuck, goes dundundundundun for a moment and then goes mute untill the song changes (usually when meeting a boss)
Is it generated music as opposed to audio tracks played from the disc? I know PAL is slower than NTSC so you'd think that the music might end up too long, but who knows what timing wackiness is happening with boot discs and region fun.

I have no idea Hobie. NTSC games play at 60hz to my knowledge. Never had any problems with my JP DC games, or when playing JP&US Saturn games on my PAL Saturn (Action Replay 4 in 1).
I mean the game itself plays fine. Dialogue is normal, the game runs at normal speed etc. It's just the songs that occasionally get stuck (repeats the same 0.1-0.2 second loop over and over again) and disappear.

Like I mentioned, with Dreamcast I use a boot disc. I insert the black CDX thingy in my Dreamcast controller and the CD in the console, launch the game, open the tray and put in game I want to play. Though there are boot discs that don't require you to insert any devices into your Dreamcast controller

This thing comes with a VHS instruction tape so if you collect VHS tapes and need a region converter for your Dreamcast, I suggest buying one :)

Actually, unless you have a 60hz switch mod on your console, they'll be playing at the PAL Dreamcast's native 50hz. The only way to force a NTSC game to output at 60hz on your Dreamcast is to use the DC-X bootdisc.

That's weird, considering I've seen plenty of playthroughs of the game on youtube and when playing it, I didn't notice any kind of difference between the two. Same goes for Guilty Gear X and other Japanese DC titles.

Does that apply to the Saturn too?

There is no such thing as a 50Hz / 60Hz switch for Dreamcast. The only thing I do know exists is a PAL60 - NTSC switch, and AFAIK that mod only works on an NTSC Dreamcast. But even if there was a PAL60 - NTSC problem, that would only affect the image, not the sound...

With the Saturn it's the console that determines if a game displays in PAL or NTSC. All games regardless of region will play in 60Hz on a US / Japanese Saturn. All games regardless of region will play in 50Hz on a European Saturn...

PS1 is just the opposite. There it's the disc that determines if a game displays in PAL or NTSC. So all European games will play in 50Hz regardless of the console's region. All US / Japanese games will play in 60Hz regardless of the console's region...

As far as retro consoles go this is what I know:

NES - console determines output / not moddable
SNES - console determines output / moddable
N64 - console determines output / not moddable

MS - console determines output / moddable
MD / Genesis - console determines output / moddable
32X - console determines output / moddable
Saturn - console determines output / moddable

PS1 - games determine output / not moddable

I am in a PAL region, but NTSC systems are very common. I must say I never noticed anything different between PAL or NTSC , 50mhz or 60mhz . I just do not see what that means. I usually take the NTSC route, some how I feel the PAL systems are kind of restricted/limited for videogames or any kind of multimedia.

It's the same deal with the Dreamcast. Only the majority of PAL games at that point had the PAL 60 option. NTSC games didn't for obvious reasons, so will be played in standard 50hz.

As for the switch thing, I was probably getting confused. But here's a link to a mod that forces every game to output in PAL 60 for the European market. The DC-X bootdisc works in a similar way if you don't want to shell out for a modded system. http://www.consolepassion.co.uk/modific ... -dreamcast

Edit: About the sound thing, my PAL Saturn seems to have sound issues with some games when playing NTSC games... When I looked it up at the time, my findings led me to believe it was due to the fact they weren't outputting in their native 60hz.

I switch my Dreamcast region to PAL at 50hz (system has region free BIOS) and tried Typing of the Dead and did not encounter any problem.
I tried with VGA and S-Video.

NOTE: My HDTV supports all video standards.
