Well before the forum went down I had a whole reply typed up. Anyways, I'll paraphrase my post.

CPU: AMD FX-8350 8 cores @ 4.0ghz

Mobo: Gigabyte 970A UD3 AM3+

Memory: 8gb (2x4) Corsair somethingorother 1600mhz DDR3

HDD: Seagate 1tb 7200rpm drive

Video: MSi TwinFrozr III AMD 7950 3gb

PSU: Corsair Enthusiast series 750w

With case, my build was just around $1000 even. You can probably work it down to $900 with some hunting. I'm supremely happy with my GPU and CPU choice. Both handle everything I've thrown at them flawlessly at 1080p and 60fps on the highest settings of most games (maybe effects turned down every once in a while on supremely high end games).

I ended up getting a lot of experience with various AMD parts over the last year so if anybody wants opinions on their CPUs and GPUs just let me know.

great idea for a thread. I'm building a new right right now as well, and actually have a lot of parts in hand or en route. I'll update later with specifics.

^ Pshhhh. For day-to-day applications it's more than sufficient. Not to mention the price/performance ratio was considerably higher for the i7 variant when I purchased. For gaming the differences are miniscule. Save that extra $100+ and put it towards a SSD.
