Yep, back in the day it took about a year for consoles to make their way to the West. In the case of the TG-16, it took almost 2 years.samsonlonghair wrote:The North American release of the Genesis was almost ten months after the Japanese release of the Mega Drive. (The European release was even later than that.) No wonder Sega had such a strong lineup of launch titles when they brought the Genesis stateside.

I'll share some love for the Genesis.
The Genesis was the first console I bought with my "own" money. By "own" I mean the money I received as Birthday and Confirmation gifts. I remember it like yesterday. My parents took my Sister and I to Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, NC (one of the best malls to ever exist) and as soon as I got out of our black and grey Ford Aerostar I rushed through JC Penny to get to Electronics Boutique. This was a purchase I had to make by myself, so I asked my parents to "Mall it" (my Father and I always "malled it" which basically meant sitting on a bench outside of a store).
I paid a bit over $200, cash for the Genesis that is currently hooked up to my crt in my gameroom. I still have the box, receipt, manual, and the CIB Altered Beast that came with it.
Still, to this very day my Genesis is the only system I've owned that has never given me guff. The thing is built like a rock and I've never had issues with it playing any Genesis game, and it's never given me anything but a perfect screen reception. And although one of my Genesis controllers sounds like a maraca, it still works.
As of now I own around 125 Genesis games, and I play them all very often. If I'm blessed enough to have a kid one day, this will be the system I pass down as I'm pretty sure it will last the longest.

Growing up almost my entire extended family had NES's. But in 1990 my oldest cousin bought a Genesis and we were blown away by Sonic 1. The fact that he looked at his watch if you had him standing there was really the part we liked. In 1991 my older brother got one (which he has hooked up in his office) and my Genesis journey took off. Filled with titles like Altered Beast, Jurassic Park, Sonics, Phantasy Stars, Golden Axi, and the amazing Truxton. Despite being a hardcore Nintendo fan, the Genesis still holds some of my favorite titles. Sadly my collection is only in the 40s (in comparison I have over 300 NES games), but I have slowly started collecting more.

Genesis was my first console ever.
I remember just hanging around in my room, doing what ever I did before video games entered my life (I guess watch TV and play with action figures).
All of a sudden my dad kicks down the door, coming in like the Kool Aid guy with a big ass box. I was so excited, I remember jumping up and saying yeah over and over again.
My dad hooked up the Sega Genesis, and it was magic from there. I dont think I even asked for it, I guess my dad saw a good deal and he's always been big on technology, so he hooked it up.
I was lucky I had Streets of Rage 2 as my first game too. That was just awesome. Kinda weird that a 5 year old could play a game where you're shanking thugs and punching girls in the tits and my parents didn't think it was too gruesome.
At my elementary school no one really talked about SNES. I think it was due to a movement I started.
One day I wanted a Game gear, but the guy at Toys R Us had told me that the Game Gear had no future and suggested the Nomad instead. I said why not, portable Genesis could be cool.
It ended up being a great idea. We bought an adapter because the batteries died in like an hour. I used to bring it to school every day because I had to stay after for a few hours since my parents worked late. Everyone else was amazed that I had a Sega Genesis in my hand, and everyone in the school had a Nomad.
It wasn't until I moved and started going on message boards that I figured out that the SNES was more popular than the Genesis. I had turned my old school into Sega town!

Although not my first gaming system(Atari 2600) I was lucky enough for it to be my 2nd. Received my Genesis christmas '93 with Sonic Spinball packaged inside. Wasn't long after that I was hooked. Its has received some neglect that last couple of years but It still gets played from time to time unlike my dusty SNES

After having an Atari 2600, Sega Genesis must have been mind-blowing for you.MulishaSoldier929 wrote:Although not my first gaming system(Atari 2600) I was lucky enough for it to be my 2nd. For the most part I was already blown away before that by playing the NES at some friends houses but the Genesis system step up was HUGE. The colors, speed, and sound were unlike anything I have ever seen.

I love the Genesis.
May I politely suggest that a mod merge this thread with this one?
Please and thank you.

Today is the 25th anniversary of American launch. Break out some Altered Beast.
