I thought Sony dropped ps2 prices down to $100 at ps3 launch, am I wrong? Plus the PS3 compared to PS4 is OLDER than PS2 compared to PS3, so it should be even cheaper right?
I don't think you can install games to external storage on any model PS3. The internal HDD is easily upgradeable though.

I remember the PS2 Slim being $129 for a long time before it went on clearance. The PS2 launch price was $299, it was dropped to $199 a year or two later to compete with the GCN and XBox, then I think $159 to compete with the Wii. The price dropped some after the PS3 came out, but only another $20 or so from where it was already.

I may be off, but that's how I remember it.

Plus, more goes into a PS3 than went into a PS2. A Blu-ray drive still costs more, it has internal storage, wireless modules/controller, and so on.

I'm not saying it won't see a price decrease, I just wouldn't expect a big cut all at once.

For CD playback, I just use a $5 used DVD player that has coax out. Sending PCM to the receiver doesn't require a powerful game console or anything. CDs are absolutely worth it - often the only way to get lossless audio quality. Even if FLAC is available online, a used CD is often cheaper. Plus they work in the car and all that.

I do often play MP3s on my PS3 though. I'm not worried, since it won't be going anywhere, but if I were selling my PS3 for a PS4 I'd be pretty bothered.

You guys really use your PS3's as a main MP3 device?

No. But as mentioned previously it is extremely NECESSARY for popular (in Japan at least) franchises like Project DIVA. And since they took out media center support you have to wonder whether they cut out media playback altogether that isn't from Sony services. Can I still watch MP4 videos on the PS4? Who knows at this point.

Damn... the ps2 was only $300 ? It used to cost something like $660 around here for a long time. I am pretty sure you couldn't find it for less than $530. You guys are lucky... I remember PSX and N64 were around $795... imagine that price in '96!

out of topic: I am surprised CDs are still a main source of music. It probably still exists but I would imagine its more of a niche thing dare I say like vinyl . You just don't see those "music only" stores any more, CDs are put somewhere in a corner in a place thats sells Videogames, DVDs, Blurays, Books, and other electronics.

I use it once or twice a week. Is that really so weird?

I don't have any other media players, besides that DVD player, and that's fine with me.

Any big box store that sells media usually still has a pretty big CD section, and pretty much any new album that gets released still hits CD. They're in decline, sure, but they're far from dead.

Also, you definitely still see "music only" stores, though most of them are independently owned.

Kind of. I can't really imagine using it as a main MP3 device. That's what Ipods/smartphones are for. I can see it being used while you clean the house or something but other than that, nothing.

Super butt-hurt about the DLNA missing. Almost enough to make me cancel my pre-order.

However, I've read a bunch of places online that enough people threw a fit about, and Sony is considering adding it in again.

If that's true, then the MP3 thing would work too. (not likely in games, but for those that use their console just to listen to music, at least it's something.)

So, I'm back on the pre-order thing again. I kind of have faith in this rumor, since I really have seen a huge uproar over the loss of DLNA streaming, and I highly doubt that Sony wants to give up any lead at all over Microsoft. They just better be careful and stop announcing things that the PS4 can't do.
