Sometimes I wish TechNet forums were as responsive/active as this one. Sometimes I can go weeks with out a single reply to a question. So frustrating.

I mean where does that show start from and how can you continue a story that long, or even how can you make people continue to watch a single show for that long period?

Its just plain weird when good shows get canceled due to low ratings, but a soap opera that has been on for 50 years still got viewers.

How does that work?
My wife has watched General Hospital for over 30 years. She gets into certain character's storylines for awhile, then goes months without watching and then comes back to it at another time. It is easy enough to get into it late in the game.

I have to admit it is cool though when they flashback to a character's childhood and it is actually the actor as a child because they have been on the show that long. General Hospital is the only show I can think of that can do that.

I talked to a guy on youtube to do a core2duo vs Core i5 comparison . He said that difference is huge, yet if I want to do email, web browsing...etc core2duo is more than enough (Even though its 5 years old) .

This makes me think, if we are not into professional creation products like building games or editing movies, and we are not playing the latest games like GTA 5 , have we reached that state in computer history where the average consumer does NOT need to upgrade his CPU/GPU power? My computer is 5 years old (in tech. years) , and I absolutely see no reason to upgrade other than playing games. I can't make an excuse for myself to buy a new laptop. (I did upgrade the RAM 2GB->4Gb and HDD from 160GB->500GB though)

@fastbilly

I imagined that Soap Operas are as long as the usual sitcoms, 3->10 years max . To be honest with you I thought shows like Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and Lost are considered the American Soap Operas. When I heard about American Soap Operas with 20+ years on air, I thought they were reboots , remakes, or they stopped for a long period of time and thought there are new audience out there that are willing to give it another shot to pickup and continue the story. I didn't realise its one long story, I mean how do the writers even keep up?

After decades on TV, I was surprised they actually decided to end those shows

So... How much does All My Children boxset costs ?

We have been there for a while. My box only got the upgrade to windows 7 but other than that it is exactly what I built in 2007. Though I will need to upgrade next year. My cpu is still kicking, but my gpu is lagging. So is my 4 gigs of ram.

Its not that hard. They just write several months in advance and they have a chronologist for the show as a head writer. Youll notice that for most of the show there are only two people on the set at a time and when the third person shows up it is always awkward. Really when you study the shows are very basic, but very engaging. Telenovelas on the other hand...

$0 - they very rarely sell dvds or tapes of soap operas. They sell big episodes sometimes, but the bulk of the episodes are never released and never replayed, but often referenced to.

While, to a point, general computer use tends to lag behind content creation, gaming, and so on anyway...yes, we've been lacking a "killer app" to warrant greater computing power for the average user.

Most are primarily using a computer to access the internet and related services. Where we've really seen a ton of progress is making that more ubiquitous. The mobile landscape has seen the kind of rapid improvement that the desktop market had - and it's not just phones/tablets, it's embedded stuff too.

It's less a matter of congratulating a Core2Duo for still being fine - more evaluating whether or not you even need something more than an iPad to do what you use it for.

Today's my wife's birthday and I don't know what to get her. I was thinking something to help entertain while she's in the hospital with my middle child, but I'm coming up blank. Any one have thoughts?

Grab a duffel and pack it full of the family photo albums? And maybe take out from a favorite restaurant?

Get a time traveling machine and get her something she asked for a week ago.

Don't know your wife, but...

If she likes coffee, a Kuerig thingamajig.

A self-warming towel rack is great for the master bathroom.

Pearl earrings and a matching necklace (seriously, no jokes please) with tickets to a local theater production always works.

Buy a cheap stop watch, and give it to her so she can record her "100 hours of massages".

Whatever you do, have your house cleaned, spit spot, before she comes home from work.

Hmm the K-cup actually would be pretty sweet for the hospital stay.

EDIT: The more I think about this idea, the more I like it. Thanks Luke!
