Re: POLL: Together Retro 2014 Nominations & Discussion Thre

Post by Menegrothx »

12 votes per person, one for each month. If it later on comes down to X vs Y in particular months, even though the person in question did not vote for either of those games (or that particular genre), they still get to vote. 3 phases; in the first people mostly nominate games and make arguments in favor of their picks and discuss how the the different months should be arranged so there would be as much diversity as possible and so on. After that people can cast their 12 votes, and still make arguments why X is a bad idea or why we should reconsider Y, or combine A and B together. A deadline might be a good idea: 1 week for giving out nominations and discussing them, 2 days for casting votes or something like that.
And after that: if it's necessary, third phase, which is voting for individual months&games (either play game X, or have a horror month and play Y and Z on October, Oddworld vs Lost Vikings, Ape Escape or Psychonauts, stuff like that).

A system like that would be more coherent and democratic imo
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

While I agree, the counter argument is that often people like to vote who have no real interest or intent of playing, nor of participating in discussion, or who have no sense of what games have generally been picked previously and why, etc. I think the way we've done it - use a tally of games discussed in the nomination thread and given a "+1" in this thread (where people generally explain why and have to read the discussion first) can be used as a basis to create polls around games/genres where theres no clear consensus. Basically the process which used to be "mod-only" (a discussion) is now community wide AND there is a chance to vote on some options as well. I see that as a nice blend of a influential and informed discussion by those most interested in the games chosen and a more democratic process for all board members to engage in. It's a good mix.

And of course you can always quibble with the choice of questions/games included in the polling, but at least Mike took the initiative to get them going after discussion here stalled. It's easy to criticize, but no one else took on the work of fostering that next step. The way I see it, the calendar should be basically set after the polls are done (in terms of selected games) with the only thing left to do is decide what game(s) should be included in a horror month (should that option win).

So what is the calender looking like?

We have to decide what horror game to chose (I have no mouth and I must scream is my nominee).

We also need to decide if Deus Ex can make the roster.

I suggested this before, but what ever game barely got in should go head to head with Deus Ex in a poll.

Did Racketboy vote in Psychonauts vs Ape Escape? He could be the tie breaker.

If anything, it was the top vote getter in FPS (before all votes were cancelled), and had a lot of discussion as Menegrothx pointed out.

DE should not be ignored, but it should just be considered. It needs a legitimate chance to make it at least.

It was decided in the Psychonauts/Ape Escape thread that Psychonauts was the winner.

Proposed Calendar:

Jan - Metal Gear
Feb - M.U.L.E.
Mar - Phantasy Star Online
Apr - Ultima IV
May - The Lost Vikings
Jun - Psychonauts
Jul - Ikaruga
Aug - Dungeons and Dragons ToD and SoM
Sep - F-Zero Series
Oct - HORROR; TBD
Nov - Shock Troopers
Dec - Deus Ex / Blood / Space Harrier

I think the last 3 listed for December seem to be the ones folks are speaking up about - 3-way vote to determine? I'll start the poll if that sounds reasonable.

Moved PSO to March to allow time to mess around w/ servers and what not.

Poll for October will be started tomorrow...

Space Harrier was one of the most supported suggestions in this thread. It's probably more definite than F-Zero or the Capcom beat 'em ups, and I'm saying this as someone who really doesn't want to play Space Harrier, but is compeltely up for the other two.

Other than that, that looks about right. I'm gutted that none of my choices on the polls won (I voted Oddworld, Ape Escape, FFXI, Longest Journey and No to MULE) but the masses have spoken (stupid masses)

Exactly. There's no way DE would stand up against Space Harrier, no way. A game with multiple ports and an arcade heritage vs. 2 FPS. Clear winner would be SH right there.

Menegrothx had an idea a few pages back --
Menegrothx wrote:You could combine Shock Troopers and Space Harrier
I don't see why we couldn't do that. 2 arcade games, that wouldn't take a whole month, and that way people have a choice of what to play, both reasonably quick too, a good choice for November. In the earlier years of TR, they combined arcade games for many months at a time.

I still don't see why DE should just be on the calendar based on the strength of the discussion it had here. It should not have to be put up to a poll.

Also, I felt King of Dragons and Knights of the Round had enough support to go with the 2 D&D games. They all fall under Capcom's RPG style beat em ups. If they don't go with them, I'll end up nominating them again next year, and then nobody will want to do those 2 for another year. What does the community think?

Y'know, with both Ape Escape and Oddworld being taken away from the list, we have no representation next year for the PS1/N64/Saturn era of consoles right now.

I reckon I might go digging for some worthy 5th gen horror themed titles for next year in that case.
