This article seriously under-values the Dreamcast hardware. "Solving the last generation's problems", eh? It certainly did that, but it was powerful enough to be forward-looking. Sony's PS2 would have been successful no matter the hardware configuration, coming after the PS1. The DVD drive was the only aspect of it that at all forward-looking, and the crazy hardware design was more of a liability than an advantage.

Slightly off topic but what Sega could use is a game like Candy Crush or Angry Birds. Two games that i dont understand the hype they received. Though Angry Birds hooplah seems to be dying down.

I understand the Candy Crush Saga thing all too well... It has taken down person after person, myself included. A hit like that could be a shot in the arm for Sega. That said, a lot of those casual games companies do really well after their "big hit" and then falter and die when they can't recreate the magic. Look at Popcap Games post-EA.

That's not really true.. But FFVII was the kick in the groin for the Nintendo and the 64. The Saturn sold pretty badly due to damaged reputation of the brand from the 32x and the fact that it was release prior to E3.. Which made no sense whatsoever..

I'm assuming you are referring to the Dreamcast.. I don't recall the Saturn ever being able to be hacked any more than the Playstation. You needed a mod chip for both or a special RAM Cart to play imports on the Saturn..

Interestingly, it was the most vulnerable member of the 32-bit gen that triumphed. Even if Saturn had been awesome, N64 would have had its fans simply for being Nintendo. PS1 wouldn't have stood a chance, though. We'd remember it the way we remember stuff like the TG16 and 3DO.
I know this is an old post, but I don't agree with that one. I think the PSX would have likely been a successful system regardless if Sega had done better or not. If anything Nintendo would have been the odd man out.

You guys think if Sega stuck with the Dreamcast and hardware business, would they have kept their addon fetish and released a "Dreamcast DvD" which attached to the Dreamcast.?

I guess Capcom could use one of these to kind of stabilize them.
