Today is the 25th Anniversary of the Megadrive/Genesis!!!!!!

One of the best video game systems ever made! I've have so many memories with this system. It was my first ever system and it's what got me into video games.

The earliest memory i have of the Genesis is when my mom was thinking about buying one. It was a sunny day and my mom was looking through the store ads that come in the mail on Sundays sometimes. I was sitting looking through them as well when my mom says "oh look that video game system is cheap we can afford that". I Instantly i look over and see the Genesis and started freaking out. I got up and ran to my older brother and told him what my mom had said. She yells "I didn't say i was gonna buy it for sure!" Well soon after that we got one. And the gamer in me was born.

If you guys have any memories you want to share post them i'd like to hear them.

Also, everytime i hear the SEGA startup chime i get a rush of pure nostalgia goodness :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxOEPBO4OqA

Genesis was the first console I ever had, also. I probably love it more now than I did as a kid, which is a little hard to imagine, but I had a lot of sports games for it growing up, because those were what I liked at the time. Sonic 2, Battletoads / Double Dragon, and Mega Bomberman were also staples of my collection, though.

I don't really care for the Sega jingle from the Sonic games, though.

Now that I've finished the flaming pile of fun retardant crap that is Mother 2, I think I'm going to get back to playing through the great backlog of Genesis games in my collection.

I think it's kinda funny that 2 of those 3 are multi-platform, and at least one of them is better on the other platform.

1st thought: Sega needs to do more to celebrate/promote this. The Genesis was the peak of their popularity.

I had a Genesis, but after what I'd call the "prime" of it's life. Most people started with a Genesis then got a SNES. I actually went the other way around. Got a SNES, played the hell out of it, then thought I was missing something over on the Sega side of things and traded my SNES stuff in for Genesis stuff at FuncoLand.

I did have a lot of fun with my Genesis. The main reasons I got it was for the Sonic the Hedgehog games, X-Men 2, and the Golden Axe games. After that I really got into the 2 Vectorman games, Comix Zone, and of course got the Mortal Kombats to play with my friends.

I still love my Genesis because of the value it offers in collecting. For the most part, the Genesis is dirt freaking cheap to collect for. Yet it has a great library of games including a LOT of hidden gems on top of a ton of well-known classics.

Eh, this birthday may be for the MegaDrive, but I think I'll hug my Genesis anyway.

I guess I'll mention this here: Last year, a coworker of mine gave me a Sega Genesis Model 2 (same one I had when I was a kid) after hearing me rave about the one I had as a kid. Since then, I've been buying games from my childhood every now and then. I currently have a small collection of 5 games (10 if you count the 6-Pak games individually).

This sentence fragment pleases me more than it should. I hated Earthbound too.

The Genesis was all I had, or really cared about, for years. I wasn't even aware of the Turbo-grafx' existence back then. Also, I did a lot of renting, and not much owning.

Nice to know I'm not the only one. I kind of wanted to like it, but I just couldn't enjoy it.

The Sega Genesis was what made me into a gamer.... I had to be 4 or 5 the console wars were going on n I remember we were at some big chain store sears or something, but I remember they had 2 big display tv's side by side. I remember my mom asking me which console I wanted the one with Mario or the blue guy. You know which one I picked but damn it's been a long time I remember being amazed by Sonic, Donald Duck in Quackshot, the shinobis, Street Fighter 2, Earthworm Jim n my all time favorite Genesis game Castlevania Bloodlines

Not to turn this into an Earthbound hate thread, but I felt pressured to like it too. I keep on reading that it's the best game ever and that even non-fans of RPGs will like it. I have to disagree with every one of those posts/reviews/videos/podcasts.

Back on topic, I found a random Genesis cartridge lying around. It's Forgotten Worlds, which I don't remember ever buying. Its label is pretty messed up, but I don't care since (as far as I remember) I didn't spend any money on it.

After reading this thread, I googled "Sega Genesis US launch date," and I was surprised by what I found.

The North American release of the Genesis was almost ten months after the Japanese release of the Mega Drive. (The European release was even later than that.) No wonder Sega had such a strong lineup of launch titles when they brought the Genesis stateside.

Two years late for Europe. No wonder Sega had a hard time weaning people off the SMS over there. I can't imagine getting a major console two whole years after launch in other regions.
