I've managed to find many well rated PS2 games for cheap, but I have yet to pick up a system.
I see there are many revisions of the hardware. I've found guides on how to ID a system, but not much on which are more desirable.
A modchip (if I can find one) might be a nice addition, but not really needed.
Any links/threads/advice you'd like to share?

Re: Looking for advice on buying a PS2
From what I've experienced before, the realy early fatty PS2's cant be hard drive hacked.
I'm sorry if if dont know the model number. But I'm sure someone will have the relevant information soon.
Some People like to hard drive hack their PS2's because it takes less stress of the lazer. Which in many models aren't to great to begin with. And especially now since many PS2's are quite the few years old now.
Yeah, there are some revisions to later models. Some later models are missing the firewire connections, not that it makes much difference.
If you can, try to test out the hardware, wherever you find it. Some have been sitting in storage/garages for a few years now and are quite grungy looking.
Slim PS2's are in the same boat. Some look okay, but some are pretty beat up. There are also lots of revisions to these as well. Some earlier models use a special power brick, and later versions use the normal plug seen on pretty much any game console.
All PS2 regardless have hardware/software revisions that may render some games glitchy or unplayable. Some early models dont play dual layer DVDs very well.
I'm sure the lists are out there for compatabilty.
I remember similar conversations before on this topic here.

Re: Looking for advice on buying a PS2
If you just want to play games normally, any model is fine. Try and get one that hasn't been used much. Slims seem to be easier to repair if the break. Have fun with the greatest console so far

Good luck with a mod-chip, unless you can do it yourself, youre out of luck.

Re: Looking for advice on buying a PS2
I have a 50001 with the original box if you're interested. It's the last fat model, has quietest fan of fats and also updated DVD firmware in line with the Slim PS2. Also built in IR port for the DVD remote. I also think the 50001 was the first PS2 to support full progressive support for DVDs. Its super clean. I also believe I have a network/HDD adapter for it but I'd have to look for that.
Older. Not wiser.

Get the Fat PS2 for the Hard Drive convenience. Installed games load soooo much faster; you can even install import games, no need of a Mod Chip.
See the PS2 Fat Hard Drive Guide in my signature link.

Thanks guys! Yeah I really just want to play games but wouldn't mind being able to store them all on an HD and not have to disk swap to play different games. Shame they do that BS where you have to buy their brand HD. I will have to get a paypal account and check out your sales threads.
Re: Looking for advice on buying a PS2
Actually you don't have to buy their brand. A standard IDE drive will work. They have a compatibility list here.SoltanGris wrote:Thanks guys! Here is the steps for installing one.

Might actually have to try this with my own system

When they do work, concentrated AWESOME. Sheer number of games easily puts it at the very peak of game console accessories ever.Hazerd wrote:Good luck with a mod-chip, unless you can do it yourself, youre out of luck.
Installing or repair not so much.
Lum fan.
