PS4 and Xbox One - are there any good games yet?

Post by Anapan »

A bunch of my co-workers are all hyped on the new consoles, and I've yet to hear about any games on the systems that aren't just a 1080P re-hash of an older established FPS gaming franchise.
I've always waited to buy a new console until I hear of a new, innovative (usually indie) game exclusive to/on it. Otherwise, the console has aged enough that I can talk a pawn-shop owner into selling me one at a reduced price as I'm buying the core library of exclusive games at his store.

Could someone please highlight the new games on the systems that are a selling point, or (since they're both supposed to be media hubs) tell me why I'd want to integrate one of them into my entertainment system? I have disposable income, but I have yet to hear of a good reason to buy one of the systems.

I feel exactly the same. I couldn't afford to buy one atm anyway but the only games I've really heard about are sequels to games that I've already played. I've yet to see something that I couldn't get somewhere else.

Someone please enlighten us

There are a small amount of new IP launch games for both, but of course we don't yet know much about their quality. There are also a lot of exciting genuinely new things named coming up in the next 6 months or so...

Xbox One:
*Launch*
Ryse (Crytek)
LocoCycle (Twisted Pixel)
Crimson Dragon (technically a new IP, though created by the Panzer Dragoon series folks)

*by mid-2014 (?)*
Sunset Overdrive (Insomniac)
Quantum Break (Remedy)
Titanfall (old Infinity Ward crew)
Destiny (Bungie)
Watch Dogs (Ubisoft)
Below (Capybara)
D4 (Hidetaka Suehiro)
Dying Light (Techland)
The Evil Within (Shinji Mikami)

PS4
*Launch*
Knack (Mark Cerny)
Resogun (HouseMarquee [Super Stardust])
Contrast (Compulsion)
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture (The Chinese Room)

*by mid-2014 (?)*
Destiny (Bungie)
Watch Dogs (Ubisoft)
Driveclub (Evolution)
Dying Light (Techland)
The Evil Within (Shinji Mikami)
The Witness (Jonathan Blow)

That's in addition to some really compelling sequels of existing IPs, of course (e.g. Killer Instinct, Killzone, MGS5, Mirror's Edge, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, Infamous, Halo, etc.). Some stuff will also come to PC, of course, but even if you strip those out you still end up with a decent first six months or so of exclusives, new IPs, etc. I'm getting both at launch and don't feel like I will have a shortage of things to play. By contrast, I haven't bought a PS3 game at retail since June (The Last of Us) or a 360 game at retail since July (DDP:SDOJ).

Transistor (PS4) looks cool. But that isn't scheduled until next year.

D4 is not in any way related to the D series, right?

It is not, it means: Dark Dreams Don't Die

Ah, ok. It might be interesting, but I think a new D would have been interesting.

Anyway, of those lists that Ds has put up, there are a few that interest me, but none that do so well enough to make me seek the console out. And there are a couple I would prefer on PC, like Titanfall. I really want to play Titanfall.

Nothing im looking forward too... was excited for Watch Dogs, but ill just catch the PC port.

Didnt get a PS3 till 2010, Wii in 2011, i think i can wait till 2015 for a PS4 or Xbox One.

I have plenty of PS3/Wii games i need to catch up with.

Sticking with my PC this next gen for now.

 Yup. That's one I'm very much looking forward to. Dear Esther is one of my favorite games of the past couple years.
