What Should We Add to the Retro Gaming 101 series?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I'm a big Master System fan (from the EU, clearly), no longer own an original Master System, but I do know all the specs, good games, a bit of it's impace in Britain, where it did well, even a little about the crazy portugese Master System 3. I could help if you're putting together a Master System one
Atari ST, Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Master System, NES, Mega Drive, 32X, SNES, Amiga CD32, Atari Jaguar, Saturn, Playstation, N64, Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox360, Wii

Gamegear, Lynx, Gameboy (100s of the bloody things), Game & Watches (coming out of my ears)

I consider certain games to be retro on all of these consoles. Even on the PS3, Wii, and 360. If we use the term to encompass all that is dated, no more, no less, then the definition is indistinguishable from the term "old."

If a modern game conforms to the norms of the 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit days, it is retro. A game like Castle Crashers pays homage to Gunstar Heroes. Shoot 'em ups like Gradius V and Thunderforce VI remain essentially unchanged from their roots. NIS JRPGs are retro interpretations of 16-bit RPG classics.

I don't know racketboy's take on the subject, but many forum members seem quite partial to the modern games that are simply new takes on the old. Games that don't reinvent the wheel, but remind us why we liked it so much in the first place.

i would like to see some on consoles that i'm not particularly familiar with. The nes has been done to death. 3do, neo geo, atari jaguar as well as the atari consoles that got numbers. I never really knew much about atari. Colecovision or intellivsion maybe.

I totally agree with Hatta: NES and SMS would round out the list very nicely. It would be especially cool to focus on all the translations for the former (courtesy of http://www.romhacking.net) and the ubiquitous presence in the Brazilian market for the latter.
I run the 8/16-bit retro site TimeWarpGamer and if you want to follow the latest updates, check me out on Twitter.

No, I mean when will the consoles themselves be retro?

Good translations of Famicom games could warrant an article all on its own, kinda like a "hidden gems" made of translated games

When they come back in style. When people stop playing. When racketboy says so. When they stop releasing new games for them. When the rapture hits.

Take your pick.

Not yet.

So... no to the PS2, no to actual GCN hardware, no to actual Xbox hardware for a degree.

So... what's the verdict, Racketboy?

Gamecube and Xbox are not devoid of new releases. The PS2 is cranking out games, though mostly it's just rereleased box sets (I have my eyes set on a few, like the Devil May Cry set cuz I don't have those games yet), multiplatform games (but if you can't get them for a current-gen system, then whatever), and a few new games, mostly RPGs. But that's probably cuz Sony's lagging in last in the current console war (I don't have a PS3, but I want one... oh, and I have a PSP).

McCain lost the election, Governor Schwartzenegger trying to overturn that fascist Prop 8, Wicked's being turned into a feature film for a 2010 release, my mom got a new vehicle (which may mean that getting up to Nags Head will finally be possible), and Christmas is coming and with a nice big Thanksgiving in between then and now, so... No rapture yet.

How about... "2009"?

I would definitely say the NES/Famicom and the PS1. These are probably the most important consoles of all time.

oooh, I like where pullmyfinger is going. Translated titles sounds like a winning list to me.
