this suggests separate tables for PCB/MAME vs DC. Won't that be a problem?

Yep, games definitely need seperate boards. The arcade version has a much lower score cap, and can be counterstopped. The DC port's score counts much higher.

So, yeah, comparing scores between a team that manages to counterstop the PCB vs a team that goes beyond the counterstop score in the DC port could be an issue... if anyone does either of those, which would honestly surprise me.

Still, I suppose we should have a plan (Like picking a different game xP) just in case this does happen

Edit: Actually, looks like the scoring is re-worked, so the 2 versions of the game are not comparable from the get-go... Randorama has a Strat thread up on shmups, and says that large enemies and bosses are worth 30-40% more points. That is a huge difference.

yup. so unless we rule out one port, i don't see how this would work for a team competition

Hmm... normally ruling out the less popular/accessable version would be a no-brainer, but not sure how we'd do this one. I know Mike, Ty, and others will want to play their boards, but I know Fox gets down on this game like a boss, and as far as I know only has the DC port.

It seems crappy either way.

Two thoughts:

If we kept it, we would run 2 tables, each member, regardless of team, could only submit scores for one table. We are counting the top 2 scores for each team.

It would look like this:

MAME/ARCADE:
dunpeal
dsheinem
mjmjr25
etc

DC:
exed
noise
fox
pierrot
fragems
Omerta
etc

dunpeal / fragems - would score a (6) 1st and 5th
noise / omerta - would score a (8) 2nd and 6th

I know this may look skewed as more people may play one vs the other, but the idea is to weight scores - so as long as 20 people don't play DC and only 3 play arcade/mame, it would work out. I'm pretty sure it will be split down the middle knowing the gaming habits of most shmuppers in this comp.

Option 2 - pick a new game.

I guess i'd suggest we finalize this part today. So everyone with an interest, please vote for option 1 (knowing it is slightly flawed) or vote for option 2. Please vote by end of day today so Pierrot can pick a new number.

Option 1 is a bit confusing. If this happened:

Mame:
Team 1:
900m
800m

Team 2:
800m
700m

DC port
Team 3
990m
880m

Team 4:
880m
770m

How would we be able to tell who actually did better? Team 3 actually has a worse score than Team 2 in this case, since it is much harder to get that many points in the original arcade release, but if we weighted the scores, Team 3 would place above Team 2, and possibly even Team 1?

Not to knock Option 1, just trying to understand it a bit more.

yeah, I don't understand option one well enough, Mike. Could we just insist on PCB/MAME? Is there anyone who wouldn't be able to do that at all?

New game would be my vote Mike, maybe something easy to score and access like Gunbird or an earlier cave game

I think, if we pick a new game, it will be random again.

Granted, if that random pick happens to ignite a fever inside my soul, I will be quite alright with that :)
