I'm going to be trying one out soon. I'm mainly eyeballing it based on all the amp models I've ever tested on several amps and VST's. I always end up going with something cloning the 5150 or 6505 because I really love that midrange growl it gives me.
Not the 6505, but the 5150 and 5150 II. Don't get a 5150 II.
Play it through a couple of cabs unless you plan on getting the combo version.

I was thinking about giving the 6505 a try when I was getting a little tired of my JCM DSL. I use to have a Peavey Valve King, and it was an amazing amp. Amazing because it retails for like $550 and it's comparable to amps double and triple its price. I originally picked it out because I was on a budget and it was a tube amp that had independent 3 band EQs (one for each channel) which for some reason most popular tube amps don't have. Anyways, the Valve King sounds amazing. I got rid of mine after I got the DSL because it was kind of a waste having two half stacks when I haven't been in a band in the longest time. But I kinda miss it, wish I still had it.

Yeah I tried a Valveking a few times. They are indeed pretty cool amps. A few years back when I was in the market for a serious amp the VK was one on my list, I ended up picking the B-52 over it though.

Those B-52's you really don't hear much about but I swear they are amazing.

There's just that whole "never happy" thing. Some of the best advice I've heard is, regarding finding the right amp for you, is that you're never gonna be happy so just stick with the one you got (assuming it's a decent amp). No matter what sweet amp you got, you're always gonna hear another one and think, "Fuck, I wish I had that instead." And you'll keep jumping from amp to amp.

When I got the DSL, I already had the VK and a Fender Roc Pro head as well, with a Marshall and Hartke 4x12 cab. I really don't need 2 1/2 half stacks, or even a full stack, so I got rid of the Hartke cab and the VK and RP heads. Now I just have the DSL half stack. And I was fine with it for a while, but lately I've been wishing I had another head just so I could have more tonal options. I decided, if I ever get around to it, I'll just get a sweet distortion pedal instead. Something that has a 3 band EQ, so I can use it as pretty much a second distortion channel on my amp.

^That one sounds pretty sweet. But better yet...

^As of right now, that's the one I'd probably get. Those Blackstar HT amps sound awesome, and from what I've read, this is pretty much like having the amp only inside a pedal. Two channels, just like the amp, thru a 12AX7 tube, 3 band EQ and Blackstar's ISF control which is actually really cool.

I've never tried one of those tube distortions before but generally I always hated distortion pedals. I always thought they sounded like crap and have no real substance to them if you know what I mean. They all just sound incredibly fake to my ears and no real OOMPH to em.

Heh - always nice to see a Guitar Gear thread on a forum!

If you see my games collection, you'll know I'm pretty retro, and my guitars are the same!

Epiphone 1961 SG Special P90 50th anniversary in TV Yellow.
Image
Fender Classic Player 60's Strat in Sonic Blue (added the red tortoiseshell guard myself for a bit of vintage contrast).
Image
Gretsch Electromatic G5122DC in Walnut. Added GFS "Liverpool" pickups, a Compton Bridge and a few other lil extras here and there.
Image
The amp is an Epiphone Valve Jr with full Power Scaling mods by Mastertone.
Image
I no longer own the Wildkat or the LP Standard. Lots of other guitars I no longer own too, including a 50's Tribute LP Studio - never shoulda sold that one. :(

Here's mine together:

Effects... Zoom 508 Echo/Delay, Marshall Reflector, Vibratrem and Supervibe, Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive.

Oh damn I'm loving that Epiphone SG you've got. TV Yellow finish is so cool too.

I also always wanted to give one of those Valve Jr's a shot. From what I hear they're supposed to be pretty spunky.

The Epi is my latest purchase, about a year ago, and it's just perfect! Great action, great neck, and those P90s are perfect out of the box. No upgrades needed! Got a bargain deal on it too - "lightly used"! I love the way the tone pots actually make a real difference with P90s.

I have to be honest here - it's probably the most "playable" guitar I've owned. On a par with the Gibson LP anyway. This pic was taken before I replaced the selector switch with a proper coloured one!

The Valve Jr is a great small amp. The cab has the standard speaker in it but one day I'll replace it with a Greenback or something. The Mastertone modifications made to it make it easy to get real overdrive levels and tones at bedroom-friendly volume levels, but I can still open it up to full pelt when the house it empty and it still sounds tight.

I'm lucky. My gear covers the sounds I want to make. Now I just have to catch up to it skill-wise! ;) I would still love an Explorer though - either a Korina or the TV Silver one...

Explorers are awesome. My next purchase is actually going to be a project guitar because I want to practice doing mods and setups. I'll probably go with a used Squier Tele when I do. I love Teles and since the hardtail bridge is the most common it's got me covered as far as learning how to set them up.

Cool SG! How do P90's sound on an SG? I've never played one before. I hate the SG's top hat knobs. I replaced mine with speed knobs.

Ah, I forgot about effects! These days, most of the time I'm playing it's in my bedroom on my small combo amp. But when I play on my main rig, I love to use effects. Kinda weird tho, I have a lot of effect pedals without actually having a lot of effects.

Delay: Ibanez DL10 and Boss DD3

Back in the early days, I never had foot switchable reverb on my amp. When I got my first half stack, the reverb on the head was broken. So, I started to use a delay pedal as more of a reverb than an echo. I had a few shitty ones before getting the DL10. It's one of those Ibanez pedals from the 80's, back when they use to make good pedals. Those things are built like tanks. It doesn't have the longest delay, so I later got the Boss DD3 to use for longer (echo) delays and now I use the DL10 exclusively for "reverb". I set it short, like a that classic "slap back" effect, pretty much just for soloing.

Flanger: Ibanez DFL and Boss BF2

Ah, the coveted DFL. Another Ibanez 80's pedal. I feel in love with it the first time I heard this. It's the best flanger, second to none. It's the deepest, most lushest, most controllable flanger. Of course, I couldn't afford one back when so I got my favorite affordable flanger instead, the Boss BF2 (hence my talk earlier about the MIJ and MIT models). I still like the BF2 for certain things, but the DFL is where it's at.

I'm not a big fan of phaser, but I wanted to get one to mess around with. I got the Boss PH3 when I traded my ValveKing into Guitar Center. I really wish I didn't get it, I'm not liking it anymore. And the switch knob broke, but you can't just go out and get a replacement part. I'll have to go thru Boss at some point to get it fixed or see if maybe I could just buy the part off them. I wanna sell it and get the MXR 100 instead. Or possibly the clone of it from BYOC.

Wah: Cry Baby x2

Wah was always my favorite effect. From Voodoo Child to Bulls on Parade. I've had a few over the years, but the Dunlop Cry Baby is really the only one to own. I have the original model. The reason I have two is because I wanted to get more out of my wah and decided to modify it. I got a second one so I could keep one stock and be able to compare the mods tonally. The mods I have done, I've tried out two different fasel inductors, then did various cap and resistor swaps to tweak the tone. Nothing substantial, sadly. Currently, I keep one going on the input and the other thru the effects loop.

DigiTech Whammy: A must have when you wanna play like Morello, but I enjoy using it to just fuck around anyways. I currently have the Whammy "4" but there's a new model out. They've made a few enhancements, but honestly, the thing that really makes me wanna upgrade is that they added the Whammy logo back on the foot pedal like the original. That logo is badass, and the reissues have the DigiTech logo on the pedal which looks bad IMO.

Other than that, I have a few random pedals. I have the Boss tremolo, the DOD EQ, and some others that I don't even bother hooking up.

What I really wanna get is the Electro Harmonix Micro Synth, but it's $300 :( If you don't know what it is, just picture the song Frankenstein. Along with other sounds you can get from it.
