Agreed. I'd suggest a poll for:

Castle of the Winds vs. Ultima IV
Metal Gear vs Monster World
PSO vs FFXI
Lost Vikings vs. Oddworld

and Maybe:
Longest Journey vs. Gabriel Knight
Eternal Champions vs. Warzard
-these two genres are less popular overall it seems...

if we do Blood in Oct, Deus Ex should be the FPS. If not, we should have a poll between them.

The least popular genres seem to be: Sim, 3D hack n slash, stealth, sports, and rhythm. I'd ditch those for this year.

my .02

Even though they're both under Action Adventure, Metal Gear and Monster World aren't really the same at all.

Maybe Monster World could be the platformer of the year?

I'm going to make another Shameless appeal for votes.

Psychonauts is a game so good, even Yahtzee likes it, And that guy doesn't like anything.

Morgan Webb loves it.

I urge you. Give your +1 to Psychonauts.

I'm going to counter your shameless appeal for votes! Master of Orion 2 and Thief 2 are much better games than Psychonauts, so I say give +1 to them rather than Psychonauts :P Also: Pick NetHack over Castle of the Winds

I guess it's kind of too late now, and sort of redundant with Deus Ex being amongst the nominees, but the original System Shock is a historically important&extremelly advanced and forward thinking game for it's time, so it would be a great game for this club to pick, and quite accessible thanks to system shock portable, espescially as it so often gets overshadowed by it's sequel.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Metal Gear and Monster World are two totally different genres, I don't think they should conflict each other at all.

Anyway, for some prelim votes I'm going to take

Oddworld over Lost Vikings

PSO over FFXI (though it's about 50/50, I don't care personally)

Ultima IV over Castle

If it comes down to pinning a genre, I would put Deus Ex under FPS rather than RPG. Though ideally it should be FPS RPG or at least Action RPG.

+1 Master of Orion 2

I'd also like to toss the following into the ring:
Wetrix - puzzle, available on multiple platforms
Crossed Swords - Action, timing

I'll
+1 Master of Orion 2 as well.

Didn't see that one as an option.

Any one familiar with Kula World/Kula Quest/Roll Away? A nice, hidden gem of a puzzle game (with a nice soundtrack) that's on PS1 and PSN (in Japan and EU). If Lost Vikings is considered a platformer rather than a puzzle game, then I think it would make a decent nomination in that category.

How is Crossed Swords 2 compared to the first one? It's a Neo Geo CD exclusive if I recall correctly so it's kind of niche in that sense, but a game I'd like to add in to my collection for that very reason.

I nominated it on page 18, but I don't think it got any votes (besides me) before this. I personally think it's a good pick because on previous years Together Retro has played a real time strategy game, but there haven't been any turn based strategy games on it. I guess X-COM: UFO Defense is a strategy/tactics hybrid, but there haven't been any 4X strategy games on the Together Retro so far. It's also the same reason I think NetHack and Thief 2 would be good games to include (if not this year, some other time).

Here's how I would propose going about deciding a final list.

1. Have polls between the top games in each genre if they're close (for example, PSO and FFXI)

2. Compile a list with the highest voted game per genre.

3. Open a new thread where everybody can choose 11 games from said list. Compile votes for the chosen games. (January-September + November and December). The top voted games fill out all the months except October.

4. For October, open a poll with all October options in it. Let everyone vote for 2. The top 2 games are chosen for out double bill.

Alternatively, you could decide October first and use it to remove genres from the list (eg. if Blood and Phantasmagoria win, remove Adventure and FPS from the options for the other 11 months).

Thoughts?

All of that sounds good, but the question is who will organize all that.

I don't mind counting up votes if a thread was made.
