Alien: Isolation

Post by noiseredux »

Yes! I was really worried that after the Colonial Marines debacle that we'd see no new Alien games anytime soon. (Remember, I loved CM). Ironically, last night I started playing Aliens Vs Predator, and this morning it's announced that Sega has trademarked a new game Alien: Isolation !!!

Here's a little bit of rumor from Kotaku:
According to our source, the protagonist of Alien: Isolation is Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, the character that made Sigourney Weaver famous and kicked off the ubiquitous sci-fi franchise over 30 years ago. Amanda, who is mentioned in the special edition of Aliens as having died while Ellen was frozen in space, has not yet been the focus of any books, movies, or games in the Alien extended universe.P

You, as Amanda, spend most if not all of the game on a single space station, according to our source. There's only one alien for "most" of the game, our source said; you'll mostly be shooting through "clones and soldiers." Vents, lockers, and melee weapons are a big part of Isolation, our source said, and the game is heavily inspired by the first Alien movie.P

Keep in mind much of this information is from six months ago; details may have changed over the course of development, as they sometimes do. However, our source re-confirmed many of these details today.P

In 2011, Sega announced that Creative Assembly was working on an Alien game, but details have been sparse. Creative Assembly's most recent game, Total War: Rome II, was quite buggy at launch, but Luke revisited the game last week and gave it a positive review.P

I feel like they'd have to really set up a tense and creepy atmosphere for this to work.

The first Alien film is fantastic, but I'm not sure how a similar game would work without being a survival horror sort of deal.

AvP was godawful too. And this just sounds terrible.

what was godawful about AvP?

And what sounds terrible about this game - all we know is some rumors of the plot.

Gimped Predator. You pretty much have to play stealthy which is ideal for a Predator, but the gameplay just sucked. I remember some cool abilities but feeling insanely underpowered.
The Alien campaign was like 1-2 hours long max when it was probably the most fun one.
The Marines campaign was just terrible. The slow-mo CoD styled pistol shot at the end was hilariously bad (visually and all) haha but anyway yeah, I just thought it sucked.

Better than Colonial Marines I'm sure, but easily one of the most boring FPS's I've played this gen.

The old AvP2 was the only good one in my opinion. I don't like the first one either.

The rumored emphasis on there being one alien and just human enemies sounds pretty lame. Have you seen SOMA? Coming from that Amnesia devs, now that looks like it could be a good homage to the original Alien.

I've only started on the marine campaign,

I'm early-in, but enjoying it.

Well, I did like Colonial Marines a lot too...

Though I find human enemies a lot less interesting, I think the idea of the single alien kind of interesting. If nothing else, it's a unique angle for an Alien game.

I haven't heard of that one. I'll keep an eye out.

After Machine for Pigs, I hope they develop a game with some actual gameplay again. Fingers crossed it's a System Shock style RPG :P

I just wish they would make an HD version of AVP 2, perhaps one of my most played PC games of my childhood.

Machine for Pigs was developed by The Chinese Room, not Frictional Games. The 1st Amnesia is the best, but I do like Macine for Pigs and I hope the rumor is true that Amnesia will continue to be handed off to different unique indie developers to put their own unique spin on the Amnesia mythos.

As for Alien: Isolation, I want to be excited, but I am wary of new entries in this franchise.

Actually, it's not as bad as you think. The cool thing about the AvP2 Alien campaign is that you have to go through the life cycle. So you start as a facehugger and must sneak around to find a target to impregnate. After that, you switch to a chestburster (and your first job is to exit the "womb," and by that, I mean ribcage), and then later grow into a full adult drone. From there, you must release the other drones. And you do fight a Predator, but it's effectively a boss battle...after all, a single drone taking down a Predator? It shouldn't happen. But after that, your hive's queen gets captured, so you have to get her back and take on more marines, mercenaries, Predators, etc.
