Yeah, you're right. For some reason I thought Raimi had directed. But it was the original Ju-On director, so if anything, he had a chance to better refine things.

Alien Versus Predator 2 improved on everything (I remember playing multiplayer on GameSpy for hours every night) but I prefer the stripped version that is AvP Gold.
AvP Gold still impresses me to this day, because no game has ever managed to capture the speed and style I felt as an Alien. Fastbilly, a bunch of friends, and I used to play a lot, and the Alien players (self included) got to the point where we would always run and always spiral our way through tunnels to throw off the Marines players. At the start of every match, the Alien players would run through and tailspike all of the lights out so the level was completely dark. We even discovered that two aliens could leap at each other and climb their bodies into the air like they were walls. We used this to get up large shafts quickly.
We learned to do all of this simply to survive. After all, Fastbilly's Predator skills were sick. I once saw him throw the disc around a corner and take out a squad of Marines. And the Marines players learned to use heavy weapons effectively. Our friend Ixcila would set up in a corner with a minigun and just hose anything that moved. And then there was Scorpion and his damned grenade launcher.
God, I miss AvP Gold.
