You mean when he banished Wan, he didn't care? OK. If you say so.

Look up comparative mythology. This theme comes up in nearly all cultures. For instance: Eden's fruit of knowledge of good and evil is comparable to Prometheus's Fire. Wan was cast out of the city just as Man was cast out of Eden. The Cherokee say that Grandmother Spider stole fire from Lightning for humanity. In the Sanskrit Vedas, Mātariśvan stole fire for humanity. The Blackfoot Indians say that Trickster Coyote stole fire and gave it to man. The Maori say that Maui stole fire from the fingers of Mahuika the fire goddess to give it to man.

There's a lot of comparative mythology in the two Avatar series. Some cross-cultural mythology comes up in nearly every episode.

There could have been a completely different, simpler reason for Korra to fight Unoloch and close the portal. After all, the spirits are wrecking everything, just like they did in Wang's time.
One might speculate that this episode lays the groundwork for Unoloch to merge with Vattu into some sort of "anti-avatar" nemesis. That's just speculation though. Time will tell.

The backgrounds reminded me of wood block prints. Look at all the spirals and unusual textures. Neat stuff.

I was thinking the same thing. If they had an entire season to tell the story of the first avatar, I think it would be awesome. Of course, from a story telling perspective, it would have to end when the avatar imprisons the evil spirit, and not flash to when he dies, but still.

In any case I appreciated the infusion of back-story and mythology. It makes the world much richer in my opinion and world building is one of the strengths of the series.

I've liked the season and its new characters. My only complaint has to be Korra acting like the goddamned Batman most of the time. I presume that's going to change now though after speaking to Wan.

Truth.

I may be the only one who likes Korra acting like a violent fighter. I think she supports the tradition of strong, tough, no BS female characters in Avatar. She may not be subtle, but she's miles better than a damsel in distress character.

I think they made her that way on purpose. She's NOT Aang, and she's close to the opposite. Aang, when faced with something difficult, was able to take a moment to breath and meditate. Korra isn't able to do this, and she's not as spiritually inclined as Aang was. She's still young, and reckless. Aang was brought up in an environment that teaches meditation and self control and whatnot. Pacifism.

I know about comparative mythology. I'm a mythology fan too (Didn't I just say I was reading Hesiod?) but that doesn't make Wang's story any better.

About the lionturtle, he didn't seem to know right away that his fire was stolen and he didn't try to take it back (he actually could have, unlike Zeus). Exile is pretty kind compared to getting chained to a rock and having your liver eaten every day.

Yeah, because parents would love if their kids saw that on Nickelodeon.

A certain fan-favorite character returned in the latest episode of Korra.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty cool.

What I don't like is how my DVR keeps cutting off the very end of the episodes.

Why would you need a DVR? just watch online. That's why I posted the link.
