I just got a second Wii for the basement (mainly as a media center since we have no cable now). I have noticed that on a 32 inch CRT the Wii looks a billion (slight exaggeration) time better than on my 52 inch HDTV.
Now I am motivated to play through my Wii library and since I have never beat a LoZ game (I know its sad) I am debating which one to play through first:
Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword? and why.

Twilight Princess.
It's debatable between which of the two I like more, but some of the gameplay mechanics and improvements are just so obvious it's best to play them in the order they released. Skyward Sword makes far better use of the motion controls in every regard and it was the first Zelda to have a orchestrated soundtrack, the music blows Twilight Princess' out of the water.
Definitely things I love about both and prefer in one or the other, but yeah I think Skyward Sword simply improved upon just about everything Twilight Princess brought to the table. Thus it might feel kind of backwards and like a downgrade if you went with Skyward Sword first instead.

Re: Which Wii LoZ to Play First?
I own both and haven't played either up to this point. I was debating which one I should play first and I went with Skyward Sword, I'm about an hour or two into the game. I'll explain.
Like Xeogred said, the obvious thought is to play TP first since the motion controls will be a downgrade from Skyward Sword. However, since TP came out, I've been going back and forth deciding to play it on the Wii or GCN. My brother bought it for me on Wii as a present when it came out, but I was actually planning on getting the GCN version. The reason, I hate motion controls and wanted to play the game with traditional controls. The reason I kept the Wii version was because it's in widescreen while the GCN version is 4:3. Lame.
So I came up with a plan. I decided to play Skyward Sword first. I'll make myself finish the game if I have to. By the time I beat the game, I'll decide if A) I can put up with the motion controls and play TP on the Wii or B) I cannot put up with motion controls and opt to play TP on the GCN with a smaller FOV. Also, I think I read that you can only equip two items in the GCN while you can equip three in the Wii version. Oh well.
So, that's my reasoning, which you can completely disregard if you don't have a problem with motion controls.

I think SS is a way better game than TP all around honestly, but TP is probably a better choice if you've never played a Zelda game before.
Re: Which Wii LoZ to Play First?
Yeah TP is pretty similar to OoT and more traditional with a simple overworld and such. SS I thought was a bit more like WW with a main hub section and then broken off areas.
I'd say personally I'm not big on motion controls at all, but it worked really well with SS and I ended up loving it after awhile. TP on the other hand, you can play the entire game with the controllers resting on your legs pretty much, it's hilarious how easy it is to swing the sword and things like that. That might be a plus for some (Ziggy) or not. So I can't really complain about that, while I liked how SS felt, I don't mind the lack of motion stuff in TP... but at the same time I can't help but feel SS was an upgrade in a lot of ways. Probably makes no sense haha.
In the end both are awesome and apparently kind of overlooked sometimes compared to the other 3D ones. But I guess that's the Zelda cycle, SS will probably be seen as the next OoT whenever the next new Zelda drops. lol
The only frustrating thing I remember motion wise in TP, was the bowling bombs stuff. That was in there right? I remember thinking it was 10x better and easier to handle in SS, but that crap was really annoying in TP.

Well I'm a big proponent of playing games in order so I say Twilight Princess.

Re: Which Wii LoZ to Play First?
I'd go with Skyward Sword, seems like a much better game, and it's not like they're really connected by any narrative.
I've always found the reason of "you should play the shittier game first, so you don't realize its shitty" to be a poor philosophy, as well as one that waste a lot of time. Good games are good games, regardless of the order you play them in imo.

Re: Which Wii LoZ to Play First?
Well I'm just with Bone in that I'm a bigger fan of release date order in any medium really. Both of these games are amazing, but SS obviously improves upon a lot of stuff TP did, but it doesn't make TP any worse... just... there's a lot of things in this case that make me think it doesn't make much sense to go backwards with them. I dunno.
Re: Which Wii LoZ to Play First?
Yeah, I'm a fan of playing games in the order they came out in. I would normally just say to do that in this case. I just happen to have the issues with motion controls and the choice to play TP without them, it changes the circumstances for me.
And I also just realized something with my plan... I might play through SS, even enjoy it, and still be at a crossroads with playing TP on Wii or GCN.

Re: Which Wii LoZ to Play First?
I have played through large amounts but not did beat: Loz, LoZ:LttP, LoZ:LA, Loz:WW and LoZ:Oot and LoZ: Mish Cap.
Before reading these posts, I took Bone's mindset and made a decision.
I started playing TP this afternoon and got to where the kids chased the monkey (not very far) and I am enjoying it so far. I just hope this one keeps me engaged long enough that I finish.
Now any non-spoilerish tip for Twilight Princess?
