I always felt that the Matrix sequels were just not as good as the original, but I still enjoyed them. And you can't really fault them for overdoing it with the CGI, cause honestly if they didn't keep upping the action people would complain.

Now the casting of the 2 robots as the main protagonist couple? That I'll complain about forever. At least we got a badass black mentor in the film.

I've seen probably a few hundred anime that fit this criteria and I still think Akira is one of the best of all time. I can count the number of anime movies I would put above it on one hand. Not that you were asking me, just reporting in as Akira Defense Force.

I watched half the film today (or the first 40 minutes to be exact). The animation is amazing, but the film is kind of slow. I'll watch the second half when I get off the computer, so I'll let you know what I thought.

It was mostly a response to the bit about it being without "anime cliches," which I think are largely dependent on the genre and time period.

I've honestly never been crazy about Akira, though I've seen it several times. I don't dislike it or anything like that, it just never really grabbed me the way it seems to for other people.

Maybe I'm just weird.

I was lucky to see Akira in a theater during an anime film festival. It was an amazing experience, and I think that Akira is one of the few anime films that improved significantly with repeat vieweings.

Akira isn't just a great anime, it's a superb movie. Anyway, I saw...

White House Down

As stupid as it was, I rather enjoyed it. There's some intensely cheesy and literal flag-waving stuff towards the climax, the line "the president has a rocket launcher" is uttered without irony and James Woods' evil bad guy plan is about as subtle a dig at american foreign policy as GTA 5's torture mission, but yeah, stuff explodes, Channing Tatum looks good while it happens and for once there isn't a load of twatty shaky-cam so I can actually see what is going on.

Shot composition. Bring it back, Hollywood.

Also watched Terminator 2. Forgotten how much appeal to children it has through Furlong/Schwarzenegger's relationship.

Umm... two or three? I don't know too much about anime but it seems like either it exploded after Pokemon, or there just wasn't much in the way of shows worth translating for the English market beforehand.

Gets worse with every viewing. So why would I keep watching it? I guess you could say it is an exercise in viewing film.

It's not a horrible movie by any means, but so much of this long winded movie falls flat. When you think the movie is going to step up the tempo, it doesn't. When you think there's going to be a climax, it doesn't deliver. It's just kind of there the entire two+ hours.
I felt the same way after recently watching the film again. I have been doing this a lot lately, re-watching older films which I enjoyed. Some films, like the Matrix trilogy, actually got better with age (I know...that sounds insane...but I feel that it is true) and others, like The Watchmen really start to falter and you can start to pick apart the little things that at first seemed really cool, but end up just being novelty and dull. The movie still looks pretty though!
It looks amazing, which is the only reason I ended up watching it. Unfortunately as you guys said, it doesn't deliver. It's not exciting, it's not intense enough, they screwed around with the ending, and that sex scene inside Archie was awful. Everyone always say "the book was better" when it comes to movies based off books, but it really is true in this case.

I just got back from seeing Gravity. I really enjoyed the film, but I felt like it fell apart in the second half. A+ for the first half. C- for the second half. Overall, I'll give it a B+. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney were fantastic in their roles.
My biggest problem with Gravity is that it was held back by a reliance on the standard hollywood formula and tropes. The first 45 minutes or so were fantastic, but once Sandra Bullock reached the ISS the film fell apart for me. Sandra Bullock's character just bounces from one disaster to another while the experienced astronaut, the guy who is one day away from retirement, dies saving her.
  • Sandra Bullock hitches a ride with Matt. He dies.
She boards the ISS. It catches fire within a minute.
She boards the Soyuz escape pod. It gets tangled in the ISS.
She frees herself from the ISS. The ISS blows up.
She tries to use the Soyuz' thrusters to reach the Tiangong. It's out of fuel.
She reaches the Tiangong. It blows up within a minute.
She reaches Earth in the escape pod. Nearly drowns opening the hatch.
She swims to the surface. Gets attacked by a shark.
She reaches land. Natives capture her and try to sacrifice her to their volcano god.
She escapes from the tribe and is rescued by a helicopter. Helicopter crashes into the ruins of Jurassic Park.
I might be a little fuzzy on the details near the end there, but I'm pretty sure I got the gist of it. I remember joking to myself that she'd reach the Tiangong only to destroy it. Hey, guess what happened? She's a god damn walking (floating) disaster.

I first saw Akira on the sci-fi channel in the 90's, before I even knew what anime was and it blew me away.

Not to mention gave me nightmares for years to come. It's not just one of my favorite anime films, it's one of my favorite films. I hope the American live action remake never makes it out of development hell.

The manga's plot is much longer and in my opinion has a more satisfying ending but that doesn't make me hold anything against the movie. They're both amazing, just different.

Night of the Living Dead 1968

Does this movie hold up or what? I don't even know how long it's been since I've seen it, but I was very overdue for a re-watch. I absolutely loved it though, as expected. I might have to check out some of the other Romero films. I'm not entirely sure if I've seen the original Dawn of the Dead, and I know I haven't seen Day of the Dead.
