Nosferatu is such a fun silent film. If you enjoyed it, I highly recommend the horror/comedy Shadow of the Vampire (2000).
Also, I spent a lot of time with the novel Dracula in college, and Ack's statement regarding Count Orlok's fidelity to the vampire in Bram Stoker's novel is correct. The vampire in Dracula (1897) is basically an amalgamation of ugly Victorian-era stereotypes of Jewish, Eastern European, and Mediterranean people, and if F.W. Murnau had given Count Orlok a head of curly black hair (and hairy palms...), he would have pretty much nailed it. (Bram Stoker was an unashamed xenophobe, and he was not a big fan of people immigrating to London at the time he wrote the novel...)

Do you have a name for the distributor of your version?Michi wrote:I'm not positive what version TCM aired, but the music in whatever version they showed was different than the music of the disk version I own. The one I have on disk, that scene is noticeably deeper than what TCM showed. If the pitch (is that the word I'm looking for?) had been a notch or two lower I probably wouldn't have noticed a difference.Ack wrote:Wait, you didn't like the use of Yakety Sax for Count Orlok carrying around his coffin?

Mill Creek Entertainment? I'm not sure. It's in one of those cheap horror movie collection packs. And I have no idea which one TCM aired, but I'm sure it was recently restored since they re-did the text segments and I think the names were changed....Damn. Now I'm going to have to watch the one I have to checkAck wrote:Do you have a name for the distributor of your version?

I'm wondering because it's highly likely we used a completely different distributor, which could be the reason behind the differing scores and levels of restoration.Michi wrote:Mill Creek Entertainment? Thats what I'm thinking. I'm actually playing the version I have right now and it's noticably different from, say, this version on Youtube. For instance, in the Youtube one if you go to around the 6 minute mark, is using a combination of wind and string instruments. In my version of that same scene they're playing some sort of organ, which seems the dominate instrument of choice for the version I have (there's some percussion, but mostly organ). And in the coffin carrying scene (around the 59 minute mark) the Youtube version is using what sounds like an organ and a horn, while my copy is playing stringed instruments. You can also compare the Youtube version to this one on the Internet Archive.Ack wrote:I'm wondering because it's highly likely we used a completely different distributor, which could be the reason behind the differing scores and levels of restoration.Michi wrote:Mill Creek Entertainment? Oh, and the version I have did switch the names of the characters to those of Bram Stokers book. The one I watched on Sunday was using their original names. They also changed the hand-written segments and even added a subtitled segment or two (that I've noticed so far.) Oh, and they also used a god-awful gothic font. Stick with stuff that's easy to read, people
To tell the truth, I'm finding all these little differences very fascinating. I wonder if anyone has bothered to catalogue them anywhere.

I watched this tonight after seeing your post. WTF did I just watch!noiseredux wrote:
I'll see any horror movie w/ Katharine Isabelle in it.
This was... so strange. But I def liked it. Just... I had no idea what to expect going in, and this almost is impossible to accurately describe.
But she was great in it.
That movie was twisted.

Ah the wonderful world of the public domain.Michi wrote:stuff about Nosferatu version differences

Movies:
Love at Fist Bite
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Young Frankenstein
Monster Squad
The Lost Boys
Teen Witch
Teen Wolf
Teen Wolf Too
The Worst Witch
A slew of mst3k's
Warlock
Critters
Ghostbusters
Dolls
The Addams Family
The Exorcist
Poltergeist
LOVE AT FIRST BITE is incredibly awful. It tries ever so hard to be funny, but delivers the laughs.
THE ADDAMS FAMILY is near perfect. Every performance is spot on, every set sets the mood, and the script is full of wit. dark humor, and knows its characters. So much fun.

Addams Family Values is even better.Luke wrote: THE ADDAMS FAMILY is near perfect. Every performance is spot on, every set sets the mood, and the script is full of wit. dark humor, and knows its characters. So much fun.

Disagree. They're both great, but I prefer the original as it doesn't have four different stories going on at once. Pugsly dressed as a turkey is hilarious though.AppleQueso wrote:Addams Family Values is even better.Luke wrote: THE ADDAMS FAMILY is near perfect.
