My TV is dying.
I am scarce on space, so I can't buy a CRT SDTV and a nice HDTV. And I absolutely despise converter boxes. So I'm looking for something that is the most "all-in-one".
Is there an HDTV LED with S Video, VGA (for the Dreamcast), SCART (highly doubt it, but im curious as i think the Saturn and genesis can use scart)?
i know they are going to have hdmis and components.
My current TV is an HDTV CRT. It's pretty nice and has 2 S Videos, components, composites, and a HDMI. But it is dying. I'm looking for a LED update now.

Re: Is it possible to find such a TV?
scart you'd have to import from Europe, support quietly died here long before HDTV.
Nearest thing is ensuring the TV accepts 240p from component.
Saturn and Genesis can use scart. Including Nomad for some reason.

HD CRTs are getting rare, maybe you could fix it? Make and model number of the HD CRT?sp957 wrote:My current TV is an HDTV CRT. It's pretty nice and has 2 S Videos, components, composites, and a HDMI. But it is dying. I'm looking for a LED update now.

I posted a Sony Wega Twenty Dollar Repair in the Guides section.
SVideo and SCART will be very dificult to find on new US HDTVs. VGA is more common on newer HDTVs, but some may not support the lower resolution of 640x480 needed for the Dreamcast.

Re: Is it possible to find such a TV?
Here's your main problem: Most HDTV's these days are going to lack S-Video. And when I say most, I mean you'll have a hard time finding one (I haven't seen any). I also haven't been seeing VGA inputs on any new HDTVs. Most of the TVs I've seen in the past year (I was TV shopping on two separate occasions) have only two HDMI and one shared composite/component input. Shared as in, you can only use one or the other.sp957 wrote:My TV is dying.

If you absolutely refuse to use converter boxes, and you need these inputs, you're gonna have a hard time finding the right TV. You'd pretty much have to search for new old stock, old model TVs that still have these inputs, which can be annoying. Or buy used.
One thing you might consider is getting an AV receiver. These days, receivers too are going to lack S-Video. But it'll be easier finding the right (old) receiver and not having to worry about inputs on the TV. You can find an older receiver that has composite, S-Video, component and HDMI inputs. You can even find one that outputs everything over HDMI, which makes life a lot easier (you'll never have to touch the input button on your TV again). You can throw away all your annoying switch boxes and have a unified device that takes care of everything.
I don't know how much attention you pay to sound quality, but if it's any at all, you'll notice in no time that all these HDTVs on the market sound like complete ass. This would be another benefit of getting an AV receiver, you can use better speakers and get much better sound quality. I realize, this is another expensive and another whole thing to have to figure out. To keep it simple, you could just go stereo. Either a stereo receiver, or just use two speakers and keep the 5.1 (or more) receiver in stereo mode. I mean, you could just use your TV for sound and use a receiver solely for video input/output, but why not get the better sound quality if you can? Speakers can be expensive, but getting a pair for a simple stereo set up can be done cheap if needed.
Unless you get an older model TV, VGA is probably gonna be your biggest headache. I know you said you despise converter boxes, but honestly, using one just for VGA would be the easiest way to go I think. I mean, you could get one that adapts VGA and audio to HDMI. It gets plugged in behind the TV and forgotten about. No big deal. I've never need one myself, but IIRC from reading random threads on the forums here, you can get a decent one for not a lot of money.
So in a nut shell, this is my suggestion. Get an AV receiver with a butt load of inputs, and preferably one that outputs everything over HDMI. Get a VGA + audio to HDMI converter for the Dreamcast. Get at least two bookshelf speakers. Now when you go to picking out a TV, the only thing you have to worry about is how good the picture looks. You can ignore what inputs it has (you just need one HDMI input), you can ignore how it sounds.

Re: Is it possible to find such a TV?
Do LED TVs overseas have SCART at all?
If I can hook up my Genesis and Saturn with SCART, and also my Dreamcast with my VGA cable, I will have no need for S-Videos at all.
I will look into older model ones as well if you guys got any names.
Ziggy587, you never You never cease to amaze me. Thank you so much for all that information. You know of any AV Receivers that has a SCART, VGA, and Component?
Here is a link to an old thread where I asked about repairing it. I fixed some of the stuff via the Service Menu.
But the TV is just dark and not bright. Kind of ruins the games. The Genesis and Saturn do not look as good as they do on my cousin's Sony CRT TV. The systems are more bright and vivid on his TV.
And I fixed the warping in the Service Menu as best as I could, but it is still not straight and even. I made the coloring better to, but it is isn't great.
I like my set up now with the dying TV. Dreamcast and Saturn hooked up via S Video, Sega Genesis with composite, and PS2 with component. No boxes or converters, just straight connections.
Though I might look into a AV Receiver like Ziggy587 said, because I would only need to buy one.

I just think it is annoying. Too much crap and some are expensive. I like to keep my wiring and cords to a minimum.AppleQueso wrote:Why?sp957 wrote:And I absolutely despise converter boxes.

If you were to splurge, perhaps XRGB3. It has normal VGA in unlike the newer version.
But its RGB and component inputs are still Japanese needing an adapter.

Re: Is it possible to find such a TV?
You might find a TV from the UK with scart, but shipping would be insane. Also you'd still be relying on the tv's own upscaler, which you can usually count on being not so great.
IMO get a nice HDTV with HDMI (Standard) and get an XRGB mini. Sure, you're going to pay good money for it, but there's a REASON. Running through any of the inputs on that, s-video included, will result in a nicer picture than using the equivalent direct input on your TV. Tv's built-in upscalers are horrible compared to an xrgb. And as previously mentioned, good luck finding anything new with S-video on it.
If you're planning on going HD and have no room for a CRT, an xrgb mini is a no-brainer if you can afford it. You can convert the included scart cable from japanese to euro (normal scart) standard, or have a euro scart input cable made quite affordably. You can also get a scart switchbox.
Seriously, check out these screen shots. It's kind of astonishing.

If I ever have to part with my PVM's, this is the route I'm going. I understand you don't want the cabling and such, but they just don't make new HDTVs with enough various inputs to accomodate like the old CRTs had.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.

Re: Is it possible to find such a TV?
Yeah xrgb mini is the one I have. Been too lazy to get a scart adapter yet.

Re: Is it possible to find such a TV?
I think i like this XRGB from what i just read.
If i buy one, and a SCART cable like this:
http://www.segastyle.com/store/index.ph ... duct_id=81
Would i need something else for the Saturn?
