These games may not be the best ever, but they have to be my favourite as they were the games I played to death growing up/yesterday.
Final Fantasy 7 - How many RPGs deal with insanity with such amazing (at the time) graphics. The whole dark blue/purple colour scheme blending with the music to set such a great atmosphere, still play it on occasion now.
Goldeneye/Nightfire - Goldeneye was fantastic and was played every day after school for a few years, followed quickly by Nightfire (GC), which I still think of as a better fps than COD. I may be the only person in the world of this opinion.
Mario Kart 64 - 3 cartridges and 1 copy on VC. I've put more hours into this than anything else than comes to mind, you wont beat me.
Pokemon Blue - Because nobody liked Ekans, it was all about the Sandshrew
Heroes of Might and Magic 2 - I lost my very first girlfriend to excessive hours on this game/Championship Manager

I think I'll go with Space Harrier. So awesome.
Re: Favorite Retro Game
favorite retro game ever - Pac Man
favorite retro 8-bit game - Metroid
favorite sorta retro 16 bit game - MUSHA
favorite not so retro 32-bit game - Castlevania SOTN
I wouldn't really consider any 3D games with polygons "retro." 2D and 8-bit are true retro games IMO. I guess it depends on your age which you condiser retro.
I'm sorry, but FF 7 is not retro....it's only 11 years old. It's like calling an 11 year old a senior citizen.

I like that sense of humour
But I have to disagree with the definition. For me retro means to be a couple of generations prior to the current one, so PS1, Saturn and N64 are all retro to me. With that said,
8-bit*: Penguin Adventure / MSX (Hideo Kojima's first commercial title afaik)
8-bit handheld: Tetris / GB
16-bit: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 / MD
32-bit: Nights into Dreams / SAT
64-bit: Sin & Punishment
DOS: Doom 2
Win9x: Blade Runner, though Deus Ex is going to replace it eventually.
* The Atari 2600 is technically an 8-bit console but it's considered to be 2nd gen (before the infamous crash of 1983)

Star Fox on the SNES is totally retro. I mean, that was basically the pinnacle of graphics right there. The rest was minor tweaking.ott0bot wrote:I wouldn't really consider any 3D games with polygons "retro."

ok you got me there. I revise my statement to:MrPopo wrote:Star Fox on the SNES is totally retro. I mean, that was basically the pinnacle of graphics right there. The rest was minor tweaking.ott0bot wrote:I wouldn't really consider any 3D games with polygons "retro."

Mostly I say this because they are built on technology that is very similar to what we are still using. Maybe they are 2nd gen systems, but they games are using current gen technology, however outdated it is now. I see a definate separation between 2d sprite based graphics, and the current style of 3d rigged polgonal based game design.
I guess i really feel that everything pre 32-bit is really the retro era of gaming and always will be no matter how many generations back it ends up being. It was the birth of true console gaming and it will always have that location in my heart. awww...

Re: Favorite Retro Game
The original SML is awesome. It was the first Mario game I ever beat. I love the music at the end of the game.
I'd have to say my all-time fave "retro" game would be Link to the Past or Super Metroid. It's a toss-up.

Naw...i'm just grouchy cause I feel old when people start calling 3d stuff retro. I grew up on a Coleco Pong machine, an Odyssey 2, then finally NES when my parents weren't so poor. But I think it's all relative to age, to someone who was born in 1990 who is 18 now....that stuff seems quite old. I was born in '81 and pong seemed old to me, especially when the genesis and snes came out. But now that I have seen video games turn into a giant revenue machine for major companies, it makes me feel better to exclude them from the retro scene and glorify failures like Sega CD and the Turbo Grafx 16. Any glorious they are indeed.
But heck, I'd still condisder games like Alien Hominid and Viewtiful Joe retro even though they are new-ish. And I love many ps1 and newer games, but they just don't have thay retro feel I think of when I think of classic video games. I'm also cheap and never buy any current gen systems or games until they go on clearance. So I never really experience the new gaming systems until the newness has worn off.
