Sega: "Wii has become the most expensive board game"

I think on one hand the Wii has become the most expensive board game on Earth - it's the kind of thing that families will play at Christmas, and probably won't play again throughout the remainder of the year. So things like Wii Sports, Wii Fit to a certain extent, that's great.
But it will be interesting to see what Nintendo does with the Wii 2 - how they choose to combat Sony and Microsoft, because they've obviously won through with the input methodology, but where do they go next? The fact that we don't know, but Nintendo probably does, is why it's the biggest company in Japan.
I liked this quote however...
It's not hardware, we keep software prices high, and I don't see much planning or recognition that games are still essentially luxury items - you don't buy them that frequently, although there's a niche there. You're talking GBP 30 minimum, up to GBP 45 for a big release.
As games get shorter the prices are either stagnating or inflating. We don't need that. Broaden the appeal of games without making them crap. Now that's a statement I agree with.

I agree with what he says
wii is like a toy more than videogame console
i am suffering a lot due to its weak game library

I thought the motion control would be put into action and give new depth of gameplay

they made it stupid swinging around device for games like cooking mama and the similar

The biggest barrier for Wii game development is also its biggest strength: the Wiimote. If you develop a PS3 game, it is trivial to port it to the 360. If you're smart, you encapsulated the graphics engine, so that part is the only real rewrite. The controllers are almost copies of each other's layouts. However, the Wiimote + nunchuck is completely different. And while the classic controller is similar to the other two, you will alienate a portion of your playerbase if you require it.

The worse part is most people who buy the damn things never play them or buy games for them, its a good thing they make money on the hardware and have from the begining. Really I look at the wii as an ok machine for games and a rather subpar machine in terms of innovation and tech its very weak tech wise even the revolution motion control has been done before. I enjoyed mine the six months I had it and may get another one later on but it is by no means as awesome as its made out to be the 360 and ps3 are much more impressive. (though the ps3 is lacking games...) and the 360 breaks....argh!!!

You know, every time we give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt, they screw us again. We thought, maybe they won't just make it a big gimmick machine. We thought, maybe they won't go back to making games that are for kids and family friendly and forgetting everyone else.

I think I finally get why lordofduct hates Nintendo

Part of me is still pissed at them for pushing Zelda:Twilight Princess as a Wii exclusive and fooling millions of consumers who knew nothing of the Gamecube version

I have to say that the Wii has brought me back into current gen gaming. I was getting tired of the same ol' first person shooters and rehashes of the same games with better graphics. I seriously thought that the PS2 would be the last current generation gaming console for a long time. People complain about the Wii's lack of good games, but I always wonder how many games they normally buy for any given current generation system. I had less than 10 games for the PS2 until recently when the games got cheaper, and I think the most I've ever had for a system when it was current is about 12 (DC). For the Wii, there are at least 10 really fun games already that either don't use motion control or use it in ways that enhance the play.

I wonder sometimes if people don't hate on the the Wii partly because so many non-traditional gamers are picking it up and talking about video games like they discovered them. It's kind of like how I hate on UNC's basketball program because of their annoying fans here in NC, even though I don't really have anything bad to say about their players or coach. Sure, the Wii has a lot of shovelware and it could have had more power, but it has an strong stable of great games with many more to come in the future.

When I saw that comment I was hoping I would see a topic on here about it so I could say this:

I have to say that I take offense that he claims boardgames are only played once a year. I carry Crossbows and Catapults, two chess sets, and Nexus Ops in my car most of the time. Also he is very very off base with his perception of expensive. Ive seen sealed copies of Titan go for $900 - reprint by Valley games should be out any week now... And ofcourse you have that copy of Monopoly with real money, and the deluxe version of Outrage in all of its $14,900 glory.

Ok back to music...

Are people still Wii bashing? Sheesh.

Nintendo was always family friendly wasn't it? Bar a couple games on N64 and GC

It's always been the same. There are always those who will bash any Nintendo console no matter what generation. Next console that Nintendo releases will be bashed by the same set of people. You can't get away from it. Nintendo does things differently, and people don't like that.

Let the children squabble over which platform is superior. The adults who are serious about their hobby just buy them all and appreciate them all for their individual strengths.
