I'm just saying it's something to try after he buys a new PSU.. Would be a waste of time to do it now.. He has to buy a new PSU anyways.. Those steps won't help his bigger issue..

Time is money. And the suggested procedure is an extra time cost.

Would that be more time or less time than waiting for a power supply to ship? The suggested procedure takes less than an hour.Jmustang1968 wrote:Time is money. And the suggested procedure is an extra time cost.
When there's a hardware problem, always check the driver first. There's three reasons behind this:
- It takes very little time.
- It costs no money.
- It's surprisingly effective.
I know my opinion is not a popular one; that's why it's called "devil's advocate."

appreciate the offer, but yeah if I'm gonna pay to replace I'd rather just make sure I get something I know is reliable.EvilRyu2099 wrote:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139027 So easy to find one.. In fact I have a 500w PSU laying around but it is generic... Here it is.. http://www.arrowmax.com/storefront/prod ... cts_id=407 I'll do it $35 free shipping if you want to take a chance on it.. But I'd go with the former...
RE: size, it *looks* like a normal size to me (and this desktop isn't one of the newer slim/mini desktops that are more typical to big box stores) but will measure first to be sure.

That isn't the point, there is no way in hell his PSU won't fail with his current configuration so it's a complete waste of timr until he buys a new one.. Period, point blank.. It might not be the cause of his problems, but it's inevitable. .samsonlonghair wrote:Would that be more time or less time than waiting for a power supply to ship? I use this to guide me on PSU choices: http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx
You're pretty much safe with anything in Tier 1/2. Tier 3 starts to get a little iffy, just do your homework. Avoid Tier 4 and below.
Edit: This is for a typical 1-GPU rig, not some heavy-duty quad XFire/SLI monster or coin-mining box. If you're going that route, better safe than sorry—go Tier 1 and spend them dollars.

You can look at this article to determine who actually makes the PSU.
I've mentioned in PM, but my suggestion for a lower-end PSU is Antec's Earthwatts 380W. Amazon is cheaper than Newegg on it right now, but I've seen them go for $29.99 in Newegg sales. I owned one, but it was the Seasonic built version rather than the Delta version.
I've used the Corsair Builders Series one in a couple builds for friends too though, and they're nice.

But we KNOW what the problem is. The power supply is not sufficient for the power requirements.samsonlonghair wrote:When there's a hardware problem, always check the driver first. There's three reasons behind this:Even if it does not work, you've lost practically nothing.

Checking the driver first is a good idea, yeah, but there's exceptions and this is one of them. If perhaps he had some other PCI add on card that wasn't working or causing the computer to freeze, then yeah, uninstall and reinstall the driver first before replacing hardware or looking to other things. But in this case, we know 100% that the PSU isn't sufficient. A tab bit more than 99.99% is how sure we are that the driver isn't the problem.
