I'm not sure what you're saying. If I'm upgrading (added RAM, added GPU, etc) and willing to replace the PSU, then isn't that "using what I have and putting together a modest rig on my own"?
Pretty much. You could upgrade the motherboard to something better, and possibly one that uses faster RAM or allows for more RAM.

It calculated about 350w, which is about 100w more than what you have right now. So, not only are you under powered, but couple that with the fact that those stock PSUs are garbage anyway, and it's safe to bet this is your problem.
too funny, I just finished doing the same thing on another site linked by Lifehacker and came up 350W. (yes, 2 sticks of 4GB DDR3). So yeah, it def seems like the PSU is a real issue here.

I've had experiences in the past where upgrading prebuilts that the motherboard had issues with adding items such as video and sound cards etc...

The mother board is also probably a cheap one designed to fulfill the task of an internet and email machine.

Is the case even metal or plastic? Only one fan? Adding the bigger PSU and the gpu will increase heat

I'm probably just adding to the echo chamber, but yeah, PSU for sure. I made sure when I upgraded a 10 year old desktop to look at the power requirements. Got a nice Silencer 310W and it works good with the nVidia FX 5500 card.

This definitely seems like PSU to me as well. I don't think I have anything like that sitting around. I found this one on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817182200, only $60 and I've had a lot of luck with Rosewill.

Just make sure the new PSU fits. Those assembly line PCs often have unusual parts/sizes...

No. No no no no no.

I cannot stress enough how bad of an idea it is to cheap out on a power supply. Cheap ones generally only last 3-12 months and can take other parts with them when they go. I had one that literally blew up and fried my entire computer, which at the time was my only "gaming" PC (specs were barely mid-range). I went a year without a new gaming PC, and although I'm very happy with what I have now (beats the living crap out of the last one), I really wish that hadn't happened.

My advice is to get an 80 plus silver or higher certified PSU. Also I'll PM you the link to an article on Tom's Hardware explaining what to look for in a PSU. Never buy a crappy PSU.

By the way, nice choice in your GPU. I had one until July when I upgraded to a GTX 650 Ti 2 GB. My sister now has the 6670 in her custom build (she was using the integrated graphics in the A6-5400k before, which aren't terrible but the 6670 definitely helped her out.)

With the hardware he's running, he doesn't need to get a top of the line PSU.. You only get 80 silver+ when you run a GPU of GTX 660 and above.. Why the hell should he get a $100+ PSU it's overkill with his system..

In fact I have a 500w PSU laying around but it is generic... Here it is.. http://www.arrowmax.com/storefront/prod ... cts_id=407 I'll do it $35 free shipping if you want to take a chance on it.. But I'd go with the former...
