It is in list of nominations, under "Other."

I understand where you're coming from considering how things went down last year, but TRPG, at least, just started up not long ago, and doesn't work on a monthly bases like TR or SOTM. Maybe it's just laziness, but I don't really see any need to filter out genres if we're essentially just selecting things based on popular vote to begin with.
Perhaps we could overlap with both SOTM and TRPG with TR. We could start an RPG at the same time the TRPG group does (one they've already picked or one that would fit into their schedule) and pick a shmup for TR that the SOTM folks would then be obligated to play in that particular month. That way we expose more people to all three groups and both popular genres get represented in TR. Is this a good compromise?

How about we do this IF an RPG or Shmup are chosen for Together Retro, but don't make it compulsory. If 12 other genres seem to be more popular picks I dont wanna have to sub one for a genre that was less popular out of obligation.

The problem is that people (myself included) are or are not weighing in with picks in these genres because any suggesting/endorsing hinges on the question of their inclusion. If the question was settled first, then I think we could better understand how to consider the genres (if at all) for next year.

I think it's a fine compromise, but I hardly speak for the entirety of SOTM or TRPG.

I think we should get rid of categories entirely. That should take care of itself, right?

I'm gonna be an old man in the rocking chair on my front porch and shake my fist at you darn kids, with your Deus Ex conversations and evil rock music!

I also still want Castle of the Winds, but then I never made any claims about not wanting SHMUPs or RPGs on the list in previous years.

I'd suggest Blood over Deus Ex if only because Blood is more obscure and hasn't received the critical and consumer attention that Deus Ex has over the years despite being well-received at the time. It's also the only one of the 3D Realms games using the Build Engine that has never seen a follow up or an update, as Duke Nukem saw several games after Duke Nukem 3D(and the release of the Megaton Edition recently on Steam), and Shadow Warrior had its recent reimagining(along with both a free re-release on Steam along with a version offering updated controls). The Blood series saw its last release in a 1999 expansion pack for Blood II. That said, it's also slightly harder to acquire than Deus Ex, though both can be picked up on GOG.

Oh, and M.U.L.E. is basically required.

Frig, I've been playing NO ATTENTION to this forum since I've had too much on my gaming plate for this month's TR and just hastily skimmed everything...

But from things that other folks have nominated, LET IT BE KNOWN THAT I SUPPORT: Ultima IV, Loom, Oddworld, Silhouette Mirage, and Final Fantasy XI. (I already play FF XI... everyone had better get on the same server I'm on!)

So are we only supposed to recommend or upvote one game per genre? Does only one game per genre get picked?

For the record, I consider Lost Vikings closer to "puzzle" than a platformer. You can't play it expecting a Mario or Sonic type game. You can't breeze through the levels and alternate control of three characters - two of them cannot jump.

So yeah, everyone +1 Lost Vikings for puzzle and Shadow of the Beast for platformer. 8)

Also I want to share my thoughts on the possibility of Final Fantasy XI:
1) A month is not much time to really appreciate what the game has to offer. BUT with a bunch of people working together, some real progress is possible. Just probably not the entire original main storyline.
2) It's a very old-school style MMORPG (but not PAINFULLY old-school like Ultima Online or EverQuest). FFXI fans tend to look down at WoW players as being too casual. There are no arrows pointing you where to go and you basically need to have a notepad handy.
3) It's probably not going to be online forever. Now that FFXIV: A Realm Reborn is out, players have been steadily dropping away. There's gloom & doom speculation that next year might be everyone's last chance to play it!

The game has some incredibly frustrating elements, mostly in how it takes forever to do things. But it also has some big pluses. I really like how it's playable on consoles, everything but the most recent expansion is still playable on PS2 even. The music is sparse, but great. And IMO the connections to the earlier Final Fantasy games like certain musical cues, monsters, job classes, Chocobos, airships, and a guy named "Cid" make things interesting for a retro-crowd!

(I-I just want to have other people to play with who haven't been playing for years and years...)

Didn't they update FFXI to make it more casual and accessible? My friends always tell me that it is a lot faster to do things now then it was before.

Yeah, back in the day it would apparently take something like a month of working with a party to get to level 10... now you can pretty easily hit that on your first day if you just want to start with fighting monsters.

But it's still not very casual friendly IMO, I think the people who say otherwise are all grizzled veterans. You hit walls where all of a sudden you need to do quests that can't be soloed if you want to have any progress in certain areas! Even though that's sort of the name of the game in MMOs, I don't remember WoW ever being so extreme in the months I played of that way back when it was new.
