Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Not all LARPing is like what you see in the movies. I haven't done it in probably 8 years at this point, but I did it for... well probably 8 years. It was a lot of fun, made a lot of friendships (most of my current core group of friends did it at some point), helped me gain a lot of confidence... but honestly, you never really would have known we were doing it if you walked past the room. No (or very few) foam weapons, no armor, no one beating each other. The White Wolf (it's a company) LARP system is basically improv acting with some rules so as to avoid the childhood "Bang you're dead!" "No I'm not!" "Yes you are!" problems. It can be a lot of fun with the right group (it can also be a huge headache with the wrong group).Forlorn Drifter wrote:I'd also like to try LARP, but I don't think I could live with the embarrassment.
Most of what you see in movies that seems embarassing with the armor and all the swords and stuff is a type called Nero. I haven't done that myself, though I know a few people who have, but it's definitely a different feeling.

Well, part of what looks interesting to me about LARP (I guess that would be the Nero type) is the weapons and armor and actual fighting. I like fighting and roughhousing and all that stuff, and I can get really into it in the right mindset. Go totally Conan on some dudes.
In fact, it is an issue when I get into a real fight. In the few cases it has happened, they've had to pull me off, and I was generally going so hot I got asthma attacks.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I also would like to try LARPing as well. Jinx and I have played some DND, but I can't stay focused enough during the board games. It was also just us, so maybe with more players it gets more exciting?
I love looking at the costumes and weapons that they use in LARP. One of my wannabe hobbies is to create things like this, but I haven't done anything recently. My childhood was mostly LARPing without the costumes and sticks as weapons, but our imaginations made up for it (we had no clue that it was an actual thing back then either). It was awesome, and I still have a functioning bow and arrow that I made when I was 7. Well, my dad has it actually. When I brought it to him, he played with it just as much as I did. I've also made wooden swords and staffs, but most of them are gone because of my Grandfather using them for various crap and destroying them. To his defense though, my dad and I did store them in his shed to hide the fact that I was using pocket knives from my mom.
Growing up in the woods with cousins around my age was awesome. We went as far as establishing villages and even currency. I had a little lean to shack built once, but I don't think it's still there 3 hurricanes and multiple tropical storms later.

When it came to DND I never wanted to role play at all, just wanted to play it like a board game haha. I've always figured I wouldn't be into LARPing then.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Probably not, but if you want to play D&D like a board game, pick up the new (relatively... a year or two old) board games they put out... pretty faithful to the experience, in a board game setting. Castle Ravenloft is one... I forget the name of the other 2... they run up to 4 people (and are definitely WAY easier with 4), take quite some time to finish, and are pretty difficult. We were rocking about a 50% success rate last I knew.Xeogred wrote:When it came to DND I never wanted to role play at all, just wanted to play it like a board game haha.
