What are some of the more interesting controllers for the SNES?

I love your videos, MetalJesus-- they always cause me to add games to my wish list that I didn't know about. This time I added Q*Bert 3, Captain Commando, and I'm especially interested in Biometal.

I remember seeing that Stealth controller in a video game magazine advertisement. Was I tempted to buy it? Nope. In my 21 years of gaming on SNES I never owned any controllers other than the standard Nintendo-brand game pad. Not that I thought the stock controller was perfect (I despised those shoulder buttons for Street Fighter II), but when I was a kid, if I had money I used it to buy games-- never accessories. In those days everybody had these "rad" ads for their VR helmets and game pads with dozens of turbo buttons or whatever, but third-party controllers were expensive and you could never tell which ones would actually be worth the investment.

Sometime maybe you could do an episode showcasing your collection of video game T-shirts.

Firepower 2000 is also Super SWIV and also came out on Genesis as Mega SWIV. It is sort of an unofficial sequel to the old Silkworm game, thus the jeep and copter combo.

A lot of games "you never heard of" in this one. They're all good. Firepower 2000 and Biometal are good shmups.

That Capcom stick looks good too, but the L and R button placement would be weird for fighting games.

I've got a wireless controller for the SNES called the Hyperbeam. made by Konami. I really don't know how rare that is, but I only saw one piece on it in a magazine a long time ago.

Did you know the JP version of Biometal has different music? For whatever reason they thought the US version needed to sound like a teeny-bopper night club.

Perhaps that is why it demands such a higher pricetag!

Biometal is awesome, and feels like the forefather to Giga Wing, but I could never stand the music. I look forward to trying out the sfc version.

JP Biometal *does* have different music, and it's much better. Activision probably felt that it was a generic shooter unless it had those "killer techno tracks" as the advertising pointed out.

It was developed by Athena, who made Daioh, Strike Gunner STG, and as Warashi also put out Shienryu. That's good enough for me.

A couple of notes:

The Peace Keepers is a part of the Rushing Beat series of beat 'em ups, and John was correct that it is the third in the trilogy. The first two games were released in the US as Rival Turf! and Brawl Brothers. They feature some changes from their Japanese counterparts, but they are definitely worth checking out for genre fans on the console.

BioMetal's soundtrack in Europe and the USA is from 2 Unlimited, based on their Get Ready! album from 1991.

And Kendo Rage is from the same company that created Musya(in your previous Hidden Gems episode) along with Cacoma Knight in Bizyland.

John has been showing us a lot of beat 'em ups in this series. Any chance you can get him to focus on fighting games? As a fellow SNES enthusiast, I would enjoy hearing his choices.
