Favorite Sega Systems Designs

Dreamcast:

I love the compact design of the console. It's white. Only downside is that there is no reset button.

The controller are good. I only wish the VMU and JumpPak plugged in from the bottom and the wire ran through the top.

The game cases suck, but not as bad as the Saturn.

Dreamcast is my favorite Sega design.

Sega Genesis Model 2:

It's small and compact. I wish it was a little more heavy though. Every little resistance moves my console all over the place. It still looks nice.

The six button controller are my favorite controllers of all time, and it matches the console. :)

The game cases are still the best, even in today's standards. And the cartridges were a convenient size.

Sega Saturn:

I hate this one. It's big. I wish they didn't waste time on Pluto or other needless Saturn stuff and just made a new compact/slim/mini version of the Saturn. Plus, mine has a brownish tint in a well lit area. I don't like having to have a AR 4in1 sticking out of it most of the time.

I don't like the controllers. It just does not feel right, nor do I like the 3D controller. I guess that is the way it is when you finally get a Saturn in 2013. I've had a Genesis in the 90s and 2000s, skipped the Saturn, and got a Dreamcast in late 2001.

The game cases are awful!

I really love the Dreamcast's design, too; I feel like its only real flaw was mechanical: The noisy fan. Even then, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to have for such an attractive, compact console.

Also, I feel that if the Master System would have had a square base, roughly the size of the PC-Engine, but with the MS' quasi-pyramidal shape, it would have been gorgeous. Perfect symmetry, too!

For the Saturn, I think in a mechanical/technical sense, it's Sega's most well-designed a console. It's a disc-based console that neither has a fan nor heat issues, which is incredibly rare. Moreover, it just has an air of class about it that makes it nice to look at.

I have to admit, I find every Genesis model ugly. I think every hardware piece Sega released during the 16-bit era was mediocre in appearance, at best, and grotesque at worst. The Model 2 Genesis looked okay, but I think a MS in a similar form factor would look far sleeker. That's just me, though.

Each to his own, I guess.

But this:

is perfectly designed to its task. One of if not the best game pads ever.

The Dreamcast is nice to look at and can be a nice conversation piece if it's the only retro console you have.

I, myself, prefer the Model 1 'High Definition Graphics' Genesis. It's beautiful to look at once you've got it nice and clean.

I'm coming around to the look of the Master System. I need to find one and I want to get one for my upcoming birthday.

i personally LOVE the saturn design. it's sleek, commanding, powerful... a case that says "i am here to dominate." but i don't like having the AR stick out of it, either. i wish there was an easy RF wireless controller mod for the system, but other than that, no major complaints can't be addressed with the proper modifications.

my favorite sega system design though is probably the CDX. compact and awesome. i just wish it played 32X carts also without having to throw that monstrosity on top.

Everything about the Saturn (either version) is beautiful. The controllers don't look dated at all and I still love the BIOS loading screens and interfaces. When I compare it to the PSX or N64, it's like comparing a serious piece of consumer tech to a couple of toys.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I agree, and the Saturn is one of my least favorite game consoles at that. The software is one thing but the design was great.

The Sega Saturn is by far my favorite Sega system design. It just looks amazing. It was my first gaming system and I still run my original close to every day.

I think something should be said about the Genesis Model 3. Given that it doesnt work with the CD or 32x, it still looks damn good and it take up much space at all. The only thing that I would change is where the AV jack and power jack is, it being on the side it kind of bothersome. I personally do not use the Sega CD or the 32x that much so I always keep the Model 3 plugged up.
I am buying all Saturn games, PM me with your offerings and I will let you know if I need the game or not! (Everything must be CIB)

Currently trying to knock off all the sports games, would like to get them <$5 each! Of course if you would like to donate them I will gladly pay the shipping! :)

I think hardware design has always been a big strength for Sega. Whether you are a fan of the games or not, no denying their consoles are simply some of the best, both in functionality and aesthetics.

My favorite Sega console design is hands down the Saturn. I like all their console designs quite a bit, but the Saturn is a work of art. Love how it looks, they last forever, controller is legendary for fighters, nice and bulky but not obnoxious, the thing has genuine personality. I particularly like the look of the white JP Saturn hardware, really need to get some of that stuff eventually.
