Maybe to show they appreciated it?
To who? The screen? The guy running the projector will feel proud.

It isnt like the actors or director hear any of the applause.

I know why, but why?

Just watched Gravity.
It was good. Not mind blowing or anything. The 3D effect was done well I think but there were a couple of "hey let me stick my hand in yr face 'cause its 3D!" moments I didn't care for.

The protagonist sitting there going "Hoooooooooooooowwwwllllllllllllll!!!!!!" almost made me LOL.

The theater I go to is a 21 and older joint and serves full food. I like to catch a show around 11 so I can eat lunch there, and there's only a handful of people in the theater.

Watched G.I. Joe Retaliation last night. A complete waste of time.

The first G.I. Joe movie wasn't a masterpiece, by any means. But it was a fun, cheesy, action-flick to watch. Retalliation didn't have that charm going for it. It just seemed like something for Rock to pose and show-off in.

del Toro made the perfect otaku live action adaptation of evangelion that will ever be. that doesn't mean i have to like it. every trope in the book is present in force, and everyone speaks japanese as well. well i don't care for any of the protagonists, in fact about halfway through the film the alien thingies are a bit more interesting to be honest. hopefully the second hour will have some special effects, because this 'character development' is boring and cliched as fuck.

being a fan of big robots doesn't mean i have to sing praises to this production.

You left out that the giant CG monsters are also better actors than most of the cast.

God what a mediocre piece of filmmaking. Even Godzilla was more entertaining, and why did the fighting have to be in water? :|

I guess it is commendable that the BWAAS in this were kept to a bare minimum
