They don't? BulletStorm is an FPS and Gears of War is a TPS.
I meant like in terms of production values, how fulfilling and neat the main campaign is, etc. I know apples from oranges, but you can at least rate different fruits by how fresh they are.

Oh, I see. I haven't played Gears of War 2, so I wouldn't know.

I'm huge on Gears, but the Bulletstorm demo didn't grab me at all.

I'm playing this right now, and it's disappointing. I generally don't like shooters, but the skill shot system intrigued me. Unfortunately, Bulletstorm is designed like every other shooter I've ever played. The skill shot system seems like a tacked on gimmick, even though the game is constantly encouraging you to do them.

You see the problem with Bulletstorm is when you have a concept like this, you need to design your game around it. That's common sense. Instead, Bulletstorm is designed like every other, run of the mill FPS game, which means that using standard FPS tactics is the easiest way to get through the game. Pulling off skill shots in this game requires so much luck and recklessness, that you start to wonder why you should even bother. Trying to do fancy skill shots is just a recipe for you getting quickly gunned down and killed. Taking cover and popping out to shoot enemies is the safest, most efficient strategy for 90 % of the game. So what the fuck is the point of the skill shot system then? That's a failure on the part of the game designers. You're not designing an industry standard FPS game. You're designing a "skill shot" game, so you need to be taking that into account for every single level of the game. Instead, the design of Bulletstorm could be copy and pasted into any FPS game. The skill shot system seems like an afterthought, with few opportunities to really take advantage of it.

This is what always pisses me off about games like this and Stranglehold and Wet. They promise you all these cool and stylish kills, so you expect that every area is gonna be designed in a way that provides you ample opportunities to kill enemies in creative and fun ways...but they never do. Each one of these games always just boils down to your standard issue FPS and third person shooter design conventions rather than actually being designed around the gimmicks they are trying to sell you on.

This is why I generally hate the shooter genre. Every game seems to follow the same design templates. Designers in this genre aren't very creative. Shooters just seem like the easy, any hack can make them genre, which is probably why so many designers flock to it. Even when they tell you they are making a game that plays differently than other shooters, it always ends up feeling like every other game on the market. It's such a samey, samey genre.

it's a shame that you didn't enjoy it as much as i did. i agree with your grievances but still the game was fun and derivative enough for me that i played through it twice.
