Whilst I'm at it, I also like the following suggestions other people have made:

Psychonauts
Ikaruga
The Lost Vikings

I'd like to make a few suggestions:

RPG: The Legend of Zelda (NES/GCN/Wii/3DS/GBA) - it's mainstream but ubiquitous and still very playable.

Fighter: Dragonball Z: Budokai (GCN/PS2/360/PS3) - A surprisingly deep fighter

Strategy: Front Mission 3 (PSX/PSN) - Required reading for any Tactics game fan

Side Scroller: Megaman 6 (NES/PSN/3DS/Wii/GCN/PS2/Xbox) - One of the most overlooked entries in the classic series.

Horror: Phantasmagoria (PC) - Why the fuck not?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Crash Bandicoot
Klonoa - PS1, Wii (other versions on GBA, PS2)
Donald Duck Going Quackers - PS1, PS2, N64, DC, PC
Donald Duck Quackshot
Batman Returns SNES, NES(?) - My choice for DEC - it's a perfect X-Man themed game.

Shock Troopers

Genre: Run n' Gun
Amazing run n gun game that I feel is DRASTICALLY overlooked. Like Metal Slug mixed with Ikari Warriors, but 10x more awesome.
Ports: Neo Geo, PS2, PSP & Wii (SNK Arcade Classics), Wii VC, PSP & PS3 (via PSN)
This one has my interest.

Here are some of my other +1s

+1 to Ultima, though I'd like to play one that is a bit more modern than the one suggested. I'm thinking Ultima 7.

+1 to Ape Escape. I've been trying to play it on emulator, but fuck it, might as well just order the damn game. Game is pretty awesome though and I think it deserves to represent 3D platforming.

+ Odd World. I've never played any of them, they seem cool.

+1 Ikaruga.

+1 a 2D Metal Gear. I've been meaning to play one. Original Metal Gear is cool, but I'd be down for Metal Gear 2 or Ghost Babel.

I'm gonna nominate one more game if that's okay...

Image
Shadow of the Beast
Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Master System, Genesis, Lynx, FM Towns, Turbo CD
The classic Psygnosis platformer. And with the PlayStation 4 remake (seriously!) on the horizon, next year would be the perfect time to check out the original.

Oh and one more thing..............

Here's my suggestion, been meaning to visit this bad boy to see how it holds up.

Image

General Chaos
Real Time Strategy
Genesis

Pretty cool strategy game for its time with some decent humor. I have no clue how it controls now, but back then it felt really fluent. I don't think it's been ported so you'd have to get the Genesis cart or emulate it. They recently started talking about making a sequel to the game about a month ago, so it may be a good time to revisit this gem.

I did. Forgive me. I want to see a bit of order & neatness.

A general reminder -- when nominating, please don't forget genre!

Here they are, by genre. This is in no way definitive, but based on what the people here have provided. It's up to NR with the final call as to what belongs where, of course. I will keep the list going with any additions, deletions or changes until it's time to pick.

Action
Metal Gear
Startropics I and/or II
Alien Soldier
Grand Theft Auto
Gauntlet
Shock Troopers
Megaman 6

Adventure
Beneath a Steel Sky
Oddworld: Abes Odyssey
Loom
The Legend of Zelda (Honestly, I can't call it an RPG, sorry Flake)

RPG
Ultima IV
Castle of The Winds
Fatal Labyrinth
Breath of Fire
Wild Arms
Grandia

Shooter
Space Harrier
Ikaruga
Robotron 2084

Puzzle
Solomon's Key
Puzzle Quest

Platformer
The Great Giana Sisters
Psychonauts
Gods
The Lost Vikings
Ducktales
Flashback
Ape Escape
Ghouls N Ghosts
Crash Bandicoot
Klonoa
Donald Duck Going Quackers
Donald Duck Quackshot

Simulation
MULE

Strategy
Cannon Fodder
Goblin Commander
Rainbow Six
Front Mission 3
General Chaos

FPS
Deus Ex
Timesplitters Future Perfect
XIII

Fighting
Mortal Kombat
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Power Stone
Dragonball Z: Budokai

Racing
Super Off Road
Wipeout
Gran Turismo 1 and/or 2

Horror
Phantasmagoria (I do however, like this choice. Only $9.99 on GOG)

Beat Em Uo
Kings of Dragons and/or KOTR
Dungeon and Dragons games by Capcom (If I had my druthers, I'd put KOD, KOTR, SOM and TOD together and make a Capcom fantasy/medieval beat em up month out of them all)
Batman Returns

That's it so far.

thanks Exed... we can probably move a few of them under the "horror genre," but this is a nice start. I'd also probably call Lost Vikings a puzzle game more than a platformer.

I must say, we have some damn fine nominations folks. Keep it up!

A couple of extra nominations in genres I havent nominated yet:

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Image
Genre: Turn based Strategy
Ports: Super Famicom, PS1, PSP
Classic and genre defining turn based strategy game. I'd also be up for Ogre Battle, but this one seems a little easier to obtain.

Wave Race 64
Image
Genre: Racing
Ports: N64, Wii & Wii U (via Wii VC)
Fun arcadey racer that doesnt feature boring cars. A classic early game for N64.

Harvest Moon
Image
Genre: Life sim
Ports: SNES, Wii & Wii U (via Wii VC)
First game in the long running series. Something a bit different to what we've played before? A sim people might actually enjoy too.

If there's one thing we can agree on, it's that Psygnosis had some of the best box art ever. Not that we don't see eye to eye on things usually ... it's just a saying ... you know what I mean.

I nominate:
Title: Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars
Genre: Adventure
Ports: PC (via GOG or Steam), iOS, DS, GBA, PSX, Wii
Image

One of the best point-and-click games of the era. Gorgeous, hand-drawn animations, good storytelling and voice acting, and challenging puzzles this game has everything an adventure game needs!
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.
